Coolant leak

The cooling system vent line snapped at the connection — $450 for parts and labor.

I was told by my wrench to keep one of these handy as it’s a common occurrence and they’re not always in stock locally.

Good reminder for me to follow through on that.

I was just about to ask if it was common or not.

Did he give you a part number, or is there a superior part available?

Nothing superior that I’m aware of. It’s cheap so you could replace it as a part of preventative maintenance around 50-60k.

Looks like nearly the same price though GetBMWParts. Thanks for the P/N!

Good to know! I’ll write this down as an additional task when I change the oil at 50K or 60K miles.

Would this necessitate bleeding the cooling system? Something like this?:

This is a very common issue on higher mileage cars unfortunately. It's just typical bmw plastics and heat cycling.

I don't drive my car much, but I collect things like this just in case I ever make it to that mileage (I'm just weird like that). Every time I open my hood after washing my car (to wipe the underside and engine bay) I look for the oil gasket leak. Takes 2 seconds.

Yup, that's what you should do - always look for leaks and issues.

(Answering my own question.)

The Q&A on FCP Euro’s page for the replacement hose says:

“Yes. It is recommended to bleed the system while replacing this hose.”

Happened to me on my E60 535i; they use a very similar (or identical?) overflow/return line on the N54. Was trying to be very careful when moving it and disconnecting it, but obviously I forgot about it for a minute when working on other parts of the engine that when I looked at it next, it was snapped. Did a DIY solution luckily at home and has been holding up since!

Even the repair instructions that I was using at the time mentions their fragility: https://www.pelicanparts.com/techart..._Replacing.htm

The system does this for you right? Does it also tell you how much coolant you've lost or what it takes to top it off?

Yes, procedure is headlights on low beam, car in accessory mode, fan speed 1, maximum heat temp. Then hold gas pedal all the way to the floor until the coolant pump turns on, car will bleed itself and switch itself off when done. Ideally this should be done more than once to ensure any air bubbles are fully purged.

No it doesn't tell you how much coolant you've lost, you will have to top off the expansion tank until the level stays stable at the middle mark, which is the seam.

How did I know you'd know this process by heart? lol

I wish my Lotus had a system like this, it's such a PITA that I've never done it in 13 years of ownership. It has "lifetime" coolant, but I'm sure it should be changed.

Lol, it's because when I did a coolant flush I did it without a vaccum bleeder, so I flushed the car like 30 times to ensure there were absolutely no air bubbles left inside. So I kind of just remember the procedure now.

The m2 is also supposed to have life time coolant as well, but that's definitely not true at all. Iirc the makers of the coolant stipulate a change interval as well.

I changed my hose at 70K km as a preventative measure, is a simple diy job on a cold engine (though the part costs double down here like everything else )

Good to see this procedure hasn't changed; was the same thing for my E60!
