In addition to best intake option for most noticeable change, would be nice to know which ones also offer adequate filtration. I would not like to sacrifice filtration in order to get a few more gains in HP

From what I have seen, as soon as you move away from oem filters you lose filtration instantly, even on the big name filters.

This youtube video demonstrates this very well, and note there is not suction being applied either which would further exacerbate the issue.

I also have my doubts about how much more surface area a cone filter has over the flat panel filter, because they taper and they must fit witin a similar confine, if I had the diamensions I could do a calculation.

That's not a round cone style filter that bmw's typically use. It is the same filter medium but not the same filter. These squashed ones have more surface area than the typical cones.

Also I looked at AFE's measurements, does height include the flange (which is a few extra inches) or is it just the filter medium? Does width include the widest part of the base (which is some extra plastic as a ring to lock into the intake housing)? So those measurements are unknown, I also do not know the size of the stock filter. The inversion is also tapered so I would need height, diameter of the widest part and diameter of the smallest part.

AFE's fiter measurements are just of the filter - I can provide Injen's as well.

Ok the injen one is the normal cylinder style, these should offer more surface area than the cones.

I need the stock filter now.

None of the intakes I mentioned, AFE, CTS, or Injen are cones, all are cylinders with an inverted cone center. They absolutely should have more surface area than the standard filter.

The cts is a cone filter, injen doesn't have the inversion.

They might have a larger surface area, the injen probably does for sure because it is very large.
