I just did my first DIY oil change age 40k miles (previous were covered by BMW maintenance plan). Used PP Euro 5w-40 with the intention on tracking 3-4 times per year. Not in warranty coverage anymore but wanted to stick with LL-01 approval so PP seemed like the best fit at a good price. That 0W-30 FE oil that came out was incredibly thin lol.

Valvoline 5W40 European Vehicle is another great LL01 option. Available in Wal Mart $22 for 5qt.

Dang! that is an awesome deal. It’ll cost me 60$ here for 5 bottles (Shell ultra helix or Amsoil Euro).

Also, I read in another thread that Quaker State Euro 5-40 is rebadged Pennzoil Euro Platinum 5-40.
It's about $16. for a 5 quart jug. I haven't used it because I have a stock of Pennzoil but next time I'll be checking it out

It is GTL base stock. How close to PPE is up in the air as SOPUS data sheets are notoriously wrong. I would say they are same or really close.

Yes. Usually wording on PDS will be "typical values."
For example Mobil1 0W40FS per Mobil1 has 1100ppm Zinc. But VOA are anywhere from 900 to 1150ppm.
Take into consideration that Blackstone VOA (and others) are having huge margin of error as methodology is geared toward UOA.

So many oils and oil threads. Finally decided to go with Motul Xcess gen2 5W40 for N55. Figured that should be good enough.

I can get this oil here. Professional AM-L. LL-04 rating. That should be better than the LL-01 right?

So it's either 5w40 LL-01 .....or 5w30 LL-04. Pls advice.

99.9% of oil threads out there are absolute garbage with users talking about their "experience" and based on pricing and brands. No one really talks about what really matters and thats the oil's specs, UOA, and certifications - just because an oil came from walmart doesn't mean it sucks. Some walmart oils are even better than the most botique oils out there.

But yeah the motul you went with is some really really good stuff you have nothing to worry about.

Your fuel quality will dictate if you can run LL-04 or not, and I am not sure how good gas is in your country.

Can you get shell helix ultra 5w-40 with the ll01 spec where you are? Because that is some really really really good oil.

Looks like same oil as Pennzoil Platinum Euro L 5W30.
Good oil unless:
1. Bad fuel (but I know Vroom was saying they have ULSG).
2. OP tracks car. Than yeah, Helix 5W40 would be go to.

Yes I can get the 5w40 w/ LL01. I'll get that then since "really" was there 3x. Thanks.

Gas company says 100 octane Euro 6. "Enviro-clean because it meets European specifications (50 ppm maximum for sulfur and 1% maximum benzene) for cleaner and more environment-friendly fuel." European (EN 228:2005) fuel quality standards.

A bit of a segway, but say I want to use the same oil into my Turbo Subaru.... would that also be "better" than using Amsoil Signature? In the aspect of just not keeping so many diff oil for diff cars.

Yeah should be fine, Subaru doesn't have any specific oil certifications they say use a good api certified oil iirc and shell helix ultra 5w40 meets that requirement and then adds other even more stringent tests on top. In terms of weight 5w40 should be fine in Subarus as well, especially since helix ultra 5w40 is a lower viscosity 40 weight.

On a side note I used to use rotella in my STI because it was kind of a cult thing - probably a stupid idea but oil weight wasn't an issue. But that thing blew up so much it didn't matter engine wear wasn't an issue if the car never lasted anyways. EJ's absolutely sucked imo, I know the new 2018+ stis have reinforced pistons but I'm sure it'll just spin the bearings and blow the turbos instead.

50ppm is too much for LL04. EU is 10ppm since 2009!
Use LL01.

Thinking of purchasing oil from the US. Where are you guys buying? Went online to Walmart and saw the Pennzoil Euro but it’s LL04. The Valvoline Euro seems to be the only one that’s LL01 but it’s more than 2x the price of the Pennzoil per liter.

What and where are you guys buying? Amazon seems pretty limited too.

I did find Penn Platinum Euro at Walmart but it's like $10. per quart. It is cheaper on Amazon. Quaker State Euro 5-40 is supposed to be rebaged Penn Platinum Euro. It is LL-01 BMW approved and just over $3. per quart.

Valvoline Euro 5W40 in my local Wal Mart goes $24 for 5qt.
Make sure when you calculate shipping it is ok price.
If you are out of warranty go Castrol Edge 0W40!

This? No BMW’s Long Life 01 qualification. Is that why you’re saying if it’s out of warranty?
