Anyway, they also seem, again, to not be concerned about the shearing down and are saying go for 4 days. I'm going to try Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w40 next so we should have that for comparison.
Can't wait to see your results on PPE!

Time to change the oil here - PPE 5w40 is best all around, or do we have something better?

I would say PPE is the best all around, fantastic specs, good price etc. If you don't care about ll01 Castrol edge 0w40 or 0w30 should be right up there if not slightly better due to its high Pao content but the downside is no ll01 rating due to its faster oxidation due to the Pao, but this doesn't matter with frequent oil changes. So it's up to you honestly, you could try some different oils and run UOA's to see which one suits your car best.

So if we're using QSE or PPE it's 5w40, but with Castrol Edge it's 0w40?

Or 0w30 for Castrol edge, your pick.

That's a shame. I am worried about the future when electric cars start becoming the norm. How hard will it be to buy oil, what will the selection look like, and how much will it be?

I think a lot of time will pass. Cars will still need differential fluid etc.
Until they can make family SUV that can do 400 miles on one charge and be recharged in 5min, we are safe from hair dryers .

Electric cars don't need differential fluid though because they have torque vectoring via independent electric motors per wheel. But maybe for other aspects they would need oil. But this would drive the cost of fluids up for our cars which will suck.

I hope that is the case, but with Canada banning internal combustion engines by 2035 and other countries including Germany set to join around the similar time frame I fear the end is coming sooner rather than later. I mean the US hasn't announced the ban yet, but can one market drive enough sales to keep internal combustion engines alive? Also this would probably also affect oil availablility as well. I just really don't want electric cars to become a thing so soon. I think we should switch to hybrid + bio fuels first then make the transition to full electric. This will give us time to prepare the power grids to handle the charging requirements, and time to make better electric cars that don't lose range in the cold. But that's not my call.

Some do have various differentials. I know they mostly do independent engines but lubrication is not going away.
EU is specific. High density, good public transportation. But in North America there is no way. Also, policy changes. When they start pushing it, if it doesn't make economical or practical sense, people will push back. BMW just announced that they are planning ICE to be well and alive in 2050. While Oslo might move to 100% EV, I am no so sure about Kinshasa, Caracas, Abu Dhabi or Waco, TX.

Yet, all the oils for M2 at ECS Tuning(apparently the most popular website to buy BMW parts) have the wrong spec?
https://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-F87-M2...e/Oil_Service/

They have:
  • BMW Genuine 5W-30
  • Liqui-Moly Molygen 5W-40
  • Liqui-Moly Leichtlauf 5W-40
  • Redline 5W-30

what the f*ck?[/SIZE]

Imo stay far away, good oil should have all the additives required already in it. That's probably why liquimoly sells this stuff because if you look at their VOA vs. other oils they have a pretty poor additive package, for example even PPE has more moly than liquimoly's molygen oil which is crazy.

Even BMW themselves stipulate not to add any engine additives.

Grade is irrelevant.
And I personally would not use Redline in cars that see street only. And it is not approved oil.

There’s quite a fair bit of LM being sold here too. Not sure if it’s just their marketing that’s good and perhaps their profit margin.

IMO it's both. Huge amounts of marketing and sponsorships from liquimoly towards racing teams, and they change crazy prices for their oil. So in the end they have large advertising and lots of profit margins built in so people don't mind selling that oil which is honestly inferior by large margins vs. cheaper oils from walmart.

Once more on this - PPE was the same as Valvoline or was the Quakerstate? I'm losing my mind here.

quakerstate euro 5w40, shell owns Pennzoil and quakerstate, and they make the moto master euro 5w40 oil (essentially PPE rebadged again) for Canadian tire up here in Canada.
