Tips for swapping front kidney grills?
Is it possible to swap the factory front kidney grills without unscrewing the front top of the bumper and just using your hands and a tool to pry it off the front by reaching through the slats?

I guess it's possible but you'd need the right tools and I'd estimate that it's easier, however painful it can be, to unscrew the top instead...
Especially once you get the first one off you can remove the other one muuuch easier by accessing it via the "space" from the removed one... |

I dunno but even unscrewing the top bumper it's still a pain in the ass. It's really quick to unscrew the bumper and remove the rubber seal, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Remove the rubber seal, Unscrew the 6 torx screws, pull the bumper section forward, stuff your hand in there & depress the clips, pop the grill out, done.
Pulled grill out again last night to fit the AFE intake duct, took me literally 20 minutes from start to finish & that included fitting the duct. Simple job.

I've done mine several times. Never popped off the bumper cover. You can release the tabs with your fingers through the front. As you get each one loose, just keep pressure so it doesn't snap back into place. Just did it again recently when installing part of an intake and it took 5 minutes. There is one awkward clip (for my hands at least) in the bottom middle part of the grill that takes some creative positioning. The rest were easy.
