Hey guys,

Had my door panel popped off today while having a play about with mirrors.

But had some issues with the little plastic thread inserts, think bmw call them expanding nuts? That sit in the door itself. They seem to be of a 2-piece design, the problem I was having was that when I came to reinstall the door panel and put the screws back in, these inserts would not grip the door and just spin.

After some trial and error they did eventually grip and tighten up. Now should these be replaced after removal like a single use part? Or is there a method to getting them right?

Just wanted to see if anyone else had experienced the same issue.

Have to say no. I've had my driver side panel off twice and the passengers side off once to install M Mirrors, no issues with taking them off or putting them back on.

Yeah I kinda gathered with the lack of replies nobody else had the same.

Just seems strange they don't want to lock into the door, I'm a technician by trade and have stripped a few doors. Never came across this before though.

I had one of those strip/spin since it didn't snap into the door skin. Ended up buying a replacement and it snapped into the door and the screw was then able to be tightened

Yeah sounds similar to what I experienced, on mine the white and black parts of the insert pictured above separated. Which then made it difficult to remove as the white part with the thread in would just spin.

I've seen you can buy bags of them pretty cheap, might be worth having some on hand just in case!

Afternoon All,

Happy New Year everyone !!

Resurrecting a thread from the dead….

I have this problem with the expanding nut already pictured, it’s behind the drivers door handle. The screw no longer bites into the block, so need to replace it.

The black outer ring is still attached to the white plastic block, but I’m looking for ideas as to the best way to remove the expanding nut from the door?

I think it’s too risky to drill and wondered if a simple 2 pronged trim tool can be used to lever the nut out. The worry is the black outer ring separates leaving the white block stuck in the door.

Any advice and suggestions would be very much appreciated everyone !!

Cheers

MJ

Did you sort this? I need to replace two of these and having got the replacements here, I cannot work out how they go into the doors.....

Maybe it will become clear when doing it, but any help would be great!
