M2 for daily or keep 335i for daily
I finally got a production number and ordered a BSM 6MT, exec, apple car play M2! I'm trying to decide if I should keep my current car when the M2 arrives or sell it.
I currently drive a 2014 335i 6MT. It has 48k miles on it and I drive around 18-20k miles per year. It's paid off. I've also paid for full maintenance and warranty (including tires/wheels) until 100k miles. Would you trade or sell the 335i and have the M2 as a daily driver, or would you keep the 335i given the fact I drive a lot and keep the M2 for weekend car/track car? Does one option or the other make more financial sense? I'm having a hard time deciding. The M2 will lose value quicker if I put a lot of miles on, but I can also throw all the equity of the 335i into it initially. On the other hand, the 335i is paid for an has full warranty and maintenance until 100k, so there isn't any cost in keeping the 335i other than the depreciation. Thanks for any input! |

Financially keeping the 335i until 100,000 miles and not getting the M2 makes the most sense. It's paid for, under warranty and has already taken its biggest depreciation hit. Having said that I went from an E90 3 series to the M2 and love it. The M2 is a great car and one that is well worth owning. I am not a fan of owning a car that I don't drive for fear of depreciation, to me there is one reason to own a car and that is to drive it. If you can swing it going with my wife's favorite answer when she has to make a choice between two options might be the way to go, that is the both scenario. Keep the 335i when the M2 arrives, I suspect you will love the M2 and decide to sell the 335 if your not using it or want to free up some cash but I wouldn't make that decision now unless you need the equity to swing the M2. |

I have a 2011 335i xDrive sedan that is also paid off and plan to keep it when I get my M2. I'll drive the M2 as my DD during the spring/summer/fall and use the 335i when it is nasty outside or when I need the extra doors. And then I plan to reverse in the winter and use the 335i as my DD with only periodic drives in the M2 when the weather is pristine.
The way I see it, this is a good problem to have. Enjoy both cars!

I use a 328i as my daily because I put about the same number of miles per year as you. I just don't want to put those kind of miles on the M2. I plan on keeping the M2 a long time while the 328i will eventually be replaced by another daily.
I also spend a lot of my daily commute stuck in traffic which is easier in the 328i which is an automatic (M2 is MT) which in your case would not be a factor since they are both MT. |

20k miles a year is a lot. It must contain many meaningless cruise miles that you don't have to put on a car like m2. Keep the paid off 335 and use m2 where "it counts".

While this is true, the less you drive the M2, the less you will enjoy the M2.
I traded in my old daily driver on the M2 and have been shopping for a replacement. I've been daily driving the M2 in the mean time, and it makes me wonder why I wouldn't want to drive this car everyday. There's no point in saving cars for the next owner. |

I know a guy who's put 2400 miles on his 1M in 5 or 6 summers. 400-500 miles per summer. What's the point in having it then?

Why? It's always going to be more expensive to have two cars, unless the other high milage car is really dirt cheap.

"Cruise abuse" a m2 is no fun and to lose all points in having such a car. No mention of practicality & road compliance concern. 3er with 4 door feels like boat or truck compared to m2.

I just wouldn't because I still think the 335 isn't just a side car it deserves more than that. I still love the 335 and have had 2 N54 sedans and enjoyed: put a lot of miles on both . I daily my new F80 M3 and old E93 M3. But I don't keep the 335 on the back burner. Sell the 335 if your done and move on.

I kept my 328i which I drive in bad weather (rain). Otherwise I drive the M2 (love the Sport mode). Since I live north of the Mason-Dixon line where we have winter, I'll be garaging the M2 for the 3 winter months which the insurance company gives me a discount for. Otherwise I'd have to invest in an expensive set of winter tires and rims and it still wouldn't be an ideal winter driver. Then there's the wear and tear on the car due to salt/cinders. And the lower annual miles will improve the car value when it's eventually sold.

Sounds like your decision is made and I agree with it - UNLESS the dealer offers you crazy money for your 335 - which we know won't happen. See how it goes with two cars, and do remember, no matter what, it will be more money to keep both cars. The money you save on the M2 in terms of depreciation will be lost to insurance, storage, and the continued depreciation of your 335.
I think there is a slight exception here in that the 1M is actually appreciating - although not nearly at the rate that the car costs me in insurance, storage, maintenance, etc.
