The M2 is not a 2-series – discuss.
My first post on the M2 Forum
After 18 months searching, I picked up my LCI LBB 6MT last Friday. Bone stock, 17k miles, sleek top. Loving it. Today, while chatting with my neighbor (RS3 owner) who was trying to insinuate the M2 was just a wide body M235… I pointed out that the M2 is built on the F80 chassis, not the F20 like the 2-series. So, technically this makes it NOT a 2-series. Right? Happy New Year! |

Right, and I don’t disagree. It was just the easiest way to explain that it’s not “just” a wide body 2-series

It's a 2-series, hot-rodded by the BMW M boys.
Tell your neighbor he drives a tarted-up Jetta.

yes the M2 is a 2-series, in the same way his RS3 is a golf.
and that fwd biased haldex is so bad that audi engineers had to make the front tires wider than the rear, rather than put a proper awd system in.

The conversation should stop after 'he drives a tesla'. Jokes aside, the rear of the car is entirely M3/M4, suspension components updated, even the engine is an N55+. It an entirely different car mechanically.
You can just as easily say the RS3 is an A3, at least we got the body kit lol |

I find it quite ironic that someone driving an RS3 would insinuate that when in fact the RS3 looks almost identical to a regular A3 2.0 TDi black edition.
At what point do we say that the performance version of the series is so different it can no longer be bunched with the regular joes? Well, the M2 comes very close to earning that title. Almost every body panel is different, as pointed out, the entire rear end is M3/4, the wheels, brakes, transmission, diff and even the N55 borrows so much from the M3/4 it is almost unfair to call it an N55. What lets it down in this argument is the interior, where even the seats are from a standard 2 series. I don't think anybody is confusing these two... The same cannot be said for our Audi sisters however

^^^I didn't realize how similar they look.
The M2 looks so much better/sportier, IMHO it's the last of the agressive looking M cars...

I think the M2 is a 2-series in some ways, and more of a 3-series in others. |

Even if the M2 is just a widebody 2-series then thats sick. Id take that car in a heartbeat.
Oh, its got upgraded engine, wheels, brakes, an LSD, hard-mounted subframe, and borrows plenty of components from the M3/M4, even better! There is literally no way to twist it in a way that the M2 is not a pure drivers sports car. Its and impossible car to insult because its just too good in every way for the price. "Widebody 2-series" is not the insult he thinks it is.

Also, BMW puts the big tires on the back of the car. Where they belong.
