So... many people bring RE71s on track wheels to the event and put the track wheels on there. I think it's a huge hassle. Does it really wear down tires to drive TO/FROM the track? For me it's about 100 mi round trip. I'd rather just peacefully put the track wheels on the night before... Thoughts?

The wear isn't an issue, it's the heat cycles. I ran Rivals on my Grand Sport and never swapped tires. I got about 130 autox runs and 3,000 miles out of each set before they were done. With the M2, I've been tire trailering the RE71's. I have about 110 runs on my first set and at most 1,000 miles and grip really fell off this past weekend.

I ran AS with the GS and BS in the M2. Front end grip is lacking in both cars but I had -2.7 camber on the front of the GS which helped with wear.

Thanks! I didn't think about that. It's hard to find reliable info on RE71r heat cycling. So if I drive to the track and back and include 2 sessions we do with 3 hr cool down in between, that's 4 heat cycles right there. 🤔

I'm at -2.9 camber

I’m at -2.9deg camber as well and drive to and from track on my RE71’s. So yeah, I’m putting a few extra heat cycles through them too.

At the end of the day, there is a limit to how much hassle I am willing to put up with for a HPDE (where I’m not being timed and having perfect tires won’t kill me).

For me that means putting em on the night before at the same time I’m bleeding the brakes and adjusting the suspension. Rather than having to load them up and stuff around bleary eyed in the morning at the track, when I’m usually flat out making grid in time anyway lol.

I'm usually bringing my track wheels/tires to the track in the back seat and switching in the morning. But it's a pain to get everything ready before the driver's meeting. If I'm doing back to back weekends, or just feel lazy, I'll keep the track wheels on.

I've gotten about 5 days worth of 4 twenty minute sessions out of my RE71s before the grip went.

And, are the “heat cycles” of driving to/from an event really an issue?

Tire temps only get 20-30F above ambient if you’re just cruising, so I don’t think they’re getting cycled.

This. 120F vs 190F is a big difference. My Hankook RS-4s never got up to temp on the street. It took a track day for them to become sticky

Thanks all. Looks like I'll be driving on the track wheels to autoX events.

Running a square 275 setup from now on. Can RE71's go reverse so I can rotate from front left to rear right?

Yes, just don’t do it in the rain or you’ll be working on your skid pad skills in traffic.

It's either drive with them in the rain, or mount them at the event in the rain though, no?

OP was asking about running them in reverse. No big deal in the dry, but the grooves are directional to push water out. You don’t want to run the tires in reverse in the rain.

And, if it’s wet, you don’t really need to worry about balancing wear anyways.

WSIR is 80 miles away. Would that just be too much to drive the RE71's to the track and back?

80 isnt that bad. Thunderhill is like 180 each way from me and most people drive on their 71s there and back.

I drive to and from my local track (Summit Point, WV), which is 45 miles each way more times in a year than I can count. I also drive to Watkins Glen and VIR, they are approx. 250 miles each way - all on RE-71s. No problems! You will certainly not generate enough heat in the tires driving to and from the track as well for it to be a concern.

The Total Toe in the front and rear is what wears the tires (ie on the insides) the most when street driving. In turn, you wear the outsides of the tires the most when on the track. You will barley wear the tires driving to and from the track. The biggest risk is getting a flat or hitting potholes and knocking the alignment off. Pack a tire plug kit!

Thx. I think my alignment is already off a few days after driving on terrible local roads

I swap them at the track so I don't have to worry about picking up a nail or screw on the ride there.

LOL I used to drive 80 miles round trip to autocross on Hoosier A6's on my Elise. Why are people asking about driving a few miles on street tires.

Agreed, the "heat cycle" driving to and from the track is not really an issue. I have my GC camber plates set at -3.1 and have no issues. But the way, I have my alignment checked a few times per year....after agressively tracking the M and hitting countless curbs, my settings never change!

I bring mine to the track and swap over there. It's no big deal as long as you have tire bags you can stand them on your back seats.

Swapping them over takes no time at all now.. I just make it my morning workout

There are some advantages and disadvantages either way, but it comes down to this:

Are you a morning person?

If yes, you bring your tires and happily work on swapping them at the track.

If not you put them on the night before and wake up just barely in time to get there for the driver's meeting.

Simple as that.
