If all the wacky rumors about the next M2 come true, it will be a $75k car. To start. And everything will be optional, unlike the already-loaded F87.

AWD....for this type of car pretty overrated, driving dynamics suffer and weight gain.

That's a no for me.

Yes. they will most likely de-tune the S58 similar to what they did to the S55 in the F87 M2 Competition. This should not be a surprise.

At the end of the day, it’s hard to go wrong with the G87 M2 if they follow the ‘it’s a truncated M3/M4’ formula

Take an M4, shrink its size, cut a bit of weight, remove a bit of luxury, a bit of stuff that is irrelevant to driving dynamics or performance, throw in a 6MT. Voilà I want one

I seriously doubt it will weigh much less then a G82 M4

I'm getting the feeling that the next M2 is not going to be the bargain that we've come to know and love. I think it's going to have a wide range in price. Start in the low to mid 60s and land within striking distance of a M4. You could stretch a little farther to get the "upgrade".

Yeah, most people forget that those of us that snagged 2016/17 M2’s paid $51-55k for them brand new.

Also kinda wild that we could sell those same cars right now for $45-48k. Not bad for 4-years and 40k miles….

I’ll keep mine for quite a while, tho!

This will be the least porky car you can get from BMW as an enthusiast though
Hmmmm Z4 M40i is pretty spritzer and will hammer the G87 for weight and is already faster than the OG M2 etc.

Ducks for cover at suggestion of a non M car. Also yes I do get that it's not available with manual and this also for many isn't an enthusiast car.

My pedantic weight post is done.

Doesn't have to be MUCH less...the new M4 already is much faster than the F87CS on the straight or going through bends

Cutting down the size and luxury you got to save some weight since they are build on pretty much the same platform

A more driver focus M4 without the size and luxury is what the M2 is about

I can agree without question

I absolutely despise the looks of new G82 M4 as many do

Regardless I'm hoping for the best from the M Division with the release of the G87 M2

If the S58 is capable of 700hp with a tune only, AWD will be needed for traction.

The main reason for owning the G87 is the engine. I think the car will be doing 7:32s on the ring stock which is 10 seconds faster on the ring.

But I'd still love this car as RWD only and think i'm planning on buying it either way.

The question becomes whether you want a 700hp to 900hp car in a small wheelbase package? Or are you better served getting the longer wheelbase M4. AWD could make it manageable enough to be fun. Especially if they tie it to modes that adjust the distribution bias. Admittedly I'd like an S58 platform that I wasn't afraid to modify. Hopefully they add more luxury to the interior.

That's what higher numbered M-cars are for IMHO.
The current M2 interior is more than enough already. I know you cannot fight progress, but the last thing an M2 needs is more 'luxury' than what we currently get.

I guess they can option a footman and a chais lounge to cater to different tastes - but I would sure hope it wouldn't be standard

I agree in spirit, but HUD would be nice.

I always hear that about an AWD (x-Drive) car. I have always found the increase traction is worth what little extra weight. IMHO. My f87 is the first RWD car I have purchased since 1995. It is fun, but I still appreciate the AWD's.

I don't see them giving it more than the M3/M4, much less the Comp models.

Sheer M pecking order I think would put it at 450, which is still pretty nice.

You can get a fairly accurate weight guestimates by taking a look at the known weights of the G82 M4, G22 4 and G42 2 Series.

Unladen Weights
  • M440i (w/ZF AT) - 1,695 kg / 3,737 lbs
  • G82 M4 - 1,700 kg / 3,748 lbs
  • G82 M4 Comp (w/ZF AT) - 1,725 kg / 3,803 lbs
  • G42 - M240i (w/ZF AT) - 1,690 kg / 3,726 lbs
The G82 M4 MT is nearly identical in weight to the G42 M440i. They're only 5 kg or 11 lbs apart. A good guestimate for the G87 MT would be roughly the same weight as the G42 M240i or the G80 M4. Add 25 kg / 55 lbs to that if it comes with the ZF AT.
