The e36 was not a true multi-link and still has a trailing arm that connects the spindle/hub to a perpendicular pivot that sits in front of the rear wheel. It's often referred to as a traction arm in motorsports. When you're past the limit of grip and apply throttle this arm helps the car "dig" and accelerate. It's essentially trying to lift the body of the car and spin it around the wheel. The longer the arm the more effective (leverage). |
