The best solution I have found is Quickjack, they are not cheap (1,000 at Costco) but if is a proper, portable lift that will lift your car at the proper lift points and give you about 20" of lift and is very safe. When you're done with it you simply lean them against the wall and they take up about as much space as a small ladder leaned against the wall. It is the best tool investment I have made. Works for a wide range of cars and is built well so it is potentially a 15-20 year tool. As a DIY guy it gives me access to more jobs, safer and quicker so it was a no brainer for me.

I use these esco jack stands because they have a flat surface for Jack had adapters.
ESCO 10498 Jack Stand, 3 Ton Capacity https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0019JVIPM/..._7OUdCbW3B824K

I have 2 because I only use them for the front, the rears can use cheapo standard jack stands with the claw style grip under the control arms.

i lift the rear high, put a jack stand up front on the same side, then put the jack on the front lift point to lift the other side and then put the jack stand on the other side.

I've been using a set of 56" Race Ramps for years with my Z3 and Z4M and a full size floor jack (not low profile by any stretch). Have not tried yet them with the M2, but will buy extenders to reduce the approach angle if I need to. The ramps make it super easy and safe to get sufficient clearance.

Outside of Quickjack, what is the best way to raise the rear with conventional jacks to a decent height? Just jack the front side as high as possible and slip the jack under the rear point?

Got it, so the subframe/beam in front of the diff. Will see if I can reach it under the stock muffler with my current jack. Need to buy some hockey pucks!

Aside from a low profile jack, you can also use the plastic moulded low profile ramps which are easy to drive on and will give you enough clearance to get the jack under the centre of the car.

A question I have for all of you is have you used the rubber jack pads that I have seen on ebay? They fit into the rectangular plastic jacking point under the sills. Are they hard enough to take the weight of the car without collapsing?

I use the generic $5-10 aluminum jackpads from Amazon and they work great. Jacking the car up now that it's lower is a whole different beast...
