Illumination ring front cigarette lighter

Tried searching, but was unsuccessful. I have a 2020 M2C w executive package in the US, is this ring supposed to light up? Mine does not. Please see attached. TIA

Mine projects an ///M logo onto the ceiling of the car at start up. Drives the hoes crazy.

It's like the Bat signal. But for hoes

Mine does not. It is really useful of you need to plug something in at night. My f10 did. My parent’s E39 did as well.

Sorry, I will clarify, is the translucent ring (where the arrow is pointing) around the 12V outlet supposed to illuminate?

The lighter socket ring used to illuminate also on my 135i but that was back in 2008. Since then, cost-cutting has rear its ugly head and they removed it..

Maybe they'll bring it back as a unique feature, for their next CS..

Thanks for asking this question OP... And for others who confirmed the "ring" around the socket does not light up, unlike in most other BMW's.

I was wondering too. I've got a 2019 M2C and noticed that on my 2018 X3, it does light up, so it got me worried that mine's not working properly...

Pretty stupid for them to add it then and not activate it. Why add the translucent ring at all then?

If you're the DIY type and you really want it, you can buy the version the illuminates and just tap into the the driving experience control (COMFORT/SPORT) switch for power..

Also, the Cupholder LED is missing also but can be easily retrofitted:

Wait, how would that even make sense / work? The outlet is ON whenever the car is running... Are you suggesting that it would know when there's a draw on the socket and light up the ring???

Whether you are using the socket or not has nothing to do with when the ring would illuminate... (Since we now know unfortunately that it does not in this car)

Like all the lighting behind the dash, including the buttons and switches, it's controlled by whether your interior lights are on or not based on the light sensor.

The brightness of which is controlled by the dimmer thumbwheel on the Headlight switch.

Bruh, the CS doesn't even have Comfort Access for crying out loud. They're going to say that the LED light adds weight and it's a weight savings feature removing it.
I guess its better than what they did with the last Z28.

Thanks! So I would have to buy a completely new 12 V socket with a ring that lights up? I thought maybe if I'm lucky, the ring already has the capability, but it's just not connected...

Sometimes, that's what they do. I know the Headlight switches for a lot of BMW's are like that... There's a blank button over the Rear foglight switch, as it's not required in NA (and drivers here are imbeciles to use it properly), but the wiring is all there to the rear foglight, and if you just get a Euro button for it, it works!

Do you drill a hole more or less for the LED to shine from the top? On my X3, I'm pretty sure the light is at the bottom of the cupholder, so when you have a clear plastic water bottle in there, for example, it's really cool as the whole thing lights up with whatever colour you've chosen for the Ambient lighting!

No sh!t, really? I toyed with getting one, but felt the 50% premium over my M2C was not worth it at all.

I never looked deeply into the specs, but I thought it was only a few minor functional things they'd left out? Like the centre armrest that doesn't open up...

CA is a HUGE feature that I've had – and loved – since 2000! OMG, I could not do without it on my DD! I haven't pulled out a keyfob in like 20 years! It's in my man purse all the time!

suit on!

Yeah but how cool would it be to pull out the key fob to your CS and go "Hey, this THANG mine" every time you unlock it? What an awesome weight saving feature.

Sometimes, BMW "bins" some of functions, where the LED is there deadheading but just decoded from operation. But it really is a hit or miss, dependent on your vehicle, region and model year, so I can't confirm with certainty.

The only way to know for sure is to actually pull out the socket and check to see if an LED is there or it's just a translucent trim. Then you can just run power to socket and you're go to go.

If not, you have to purchase a socket with the illuminating ring, LED included and tap into the rocker switch for power.

Instead of binning, I assume to save a buck, BMW just doesn't include the LED altogether. Like for instance, this US spec headlight switch below, were the LED behind the blank button is omitted, where it is not necessary.

Like I said, it's the luck of the draw.. 😗

https://www.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...php?p=26388409

As far as the cup holder light goes, you need to purchase the actual part and wire harness, with the LED and it pops right in. No drilling involve. There is already an opening there for the LED but it's just currently replaced by a blank cover.

Do you think the OP of this thread and the OP complaining about wrinkled seats are either in cahoots or in a competition to see who can get the most comments on a trivial item?

Only plebes use the off the rack offering.

My seat heaters were custom tailored via coding to my butt cheeks exact preferred warmth as part of my private fitting ahead of delivery.
