What is your gas getting routine?

Hey All,

I am a brand new M2C owner, picked up a great deal with all the Covid stuff happening in late April, and am still in my break-in period. So far I love the car, and spent many hours on this forum researching before I purchased, so thanks to everyone for making this an active community. The biggest pros and cons have been well documented in other posts, but I am happy to share my impressions if anyone cares.

I went for a fill up today, and ran into a weird issue, I am wondering how you normally gas up.

Here is my problem: I haven't yet purchased the coding tool to turn off what is easily the dumbest "feature", that the stereo stays on when the doors are closed after engine shutoff. Not wanting to be a total douche at the station and have music pumping (and also seems like maybe a safety issue?) I hit the lock button to get the radio to stop, but this was after I had already opened the gas door. I learned today that locking the door also deploys a lock on the gas door, so I was standing there like an idiot trying to figure out how to close the damn door.

So my question is, for those of you who haven't done any code hacking, what's the best order of operations to fill up? Get out, lock, unlock, fill up? Just keep on pumping the music? WHY BMW WHY

Congrats on the new M2C.

If you just press the ignition button one more time after turning off the car, it will also turn off the stereo.

You can use BimmerCode to bring back radio shut off when doors open and engine off

I normally just hit the red button twice and it's all off after that

Then I proceed as usual

Good buy🤘🏼

I coded the radio off with Bimmercode - cheap and simple.

Before that I would just hit the volume button to turn it off.

Just make sure your foot is off the brake or you will restart the car...

This is one of the silliest threads I have seen. The turn off routine on BMWs has been around for a long time. It has been the same for my last 3 BMWs.

Any new BMW owner would probably not know this. I know the times I've let my brother or friend drive they respond with a "wtf" lol. Same with the door handles.

I felt for the longest time the fact that I had to press it twice seemed silly. Now I'm just used to it!

I just lower the volume of the music when I shut off the car...

As a side note, I accidentally discovered this week that the car tells me where the cheapest gas is. I couldn't be more excited about life right now.

Y'all are lucky to not live in Cali. Low quality fuel that's never below $3/gal (as of now that is). Much higher last year

Thanks for all the tips everyone, I actually had no idea about the double ignition button working like that which totally solves the problem until I code it! @danG as this is my first BMW I've owned, it definitely wasn't intuitive to me that it works that way.

Poor customer education by your dealer. That was one of the first things that my dealer covers on delivery.

yeah lots of things are 2x on this car.

2x pull on handle to open hood, 2x pull on door handle from inside to open door, 2x on start button to shut off car (foot on brake then foot off brake for electronics)

I codes the car to shut off electrics as soon as I open the door so I don't have to hit the start button twice.

Interestingly in my e90 it's the same but I can hold the start button to turn everything off. Not so on the m2.

...you can also just push the radio button (once!) and it will mute/shut off the music.

Oh wow. I’ve owned BMWs for the last decade but had no idea about this feature. Great call out!

I feel BMW working is no different from any other cars or brands in the past. Think of it from the old school car turn key perspective. With a key, there are 4 states - Off, int, on, ignition.
Off is everything off.
Int, electrics are on, is radio
On, engine is running
Ignition, starting the car. On keyless, this is the equivalent as foot on brake and start. Just like keys, once started the states transitions back to on. This is a temporary state.
So as above all states are the same as take turn keys. So the key difference is the user interface where it's push button vs turn key for state transition.
However, all that being said, I do agree that push button does not make it blatantly obvious.
So complaining about needing to push the button twice to turn off the car is similar as complaining to turn the key two notches to off. (On to int to off) 😗

I just listen to the news while i gas up my car, it's one of my favorite features and it annoys the crap outta me that the new BMWs are trying to get rid of it.
Luckily you can just turn off, turn off after door opening.

Aye.
Or just press the stereo button to off or turn down the music when arriving for gas?

1) Approach gas station slowly in car
2) Assess the situation from the road, before entering the lot
3) If crowded, throw out tear gas to disperse the rioters
4) Park car at pump
5) Put on hazmat gear
6) Pump gas
7) After gas pumped, enter car and cry about what the world has come to, then sanitize my tears away.
8) Head back to the homeless shelter I'm undercover at, so I don't get killed for being a rich white guy.

It’s my first BMW and I did the exact same thing. Now I just mute the radio when I turn off the car to get gas.
