Yes, you can get your dealership activating it, or you can go with other options available online for less.

I personally tried this Bimmer Unlock and they were fantastic.
https://bimmer-unlock.com/collection...sb-full-screen

My firmware was updated and had to go with a remote coding with them... very easy, but I had to secure an OBD2 cable. Here are some pics:
How do I get the full screen?
That website offers it... It requires remote conding

No, if you do not have 6CP Apple CarPlay Compatibility. Otherwise you maybe able to go with a third-party solution.

The attached describes the required hardware before 6CP.

When not factory-equipped with CarPlay™ Compatibility, vehicles must be factory-equipped with Navigation and either 6NW (Wireless Charging), 6NP (Enhanced USB and Bluetooth), or 6NS (Smartphone Integration / Enhanced USB and Bluetooth) in order to be eligible for purchase of CarPlay Compatibility via the My BMW ConnectedDrive Store.

At least here in the USA, if you pay for Apple Carplay option ($300), then you get a subscription valid for 20 years (basically life of the car).
That's what I have in the LCI M2.

But your question is on M2C, which I understand comes with Apple Carplay, at least for one year (I could be wrong there). I think it costs $80/year after first year. That's how BMW is marketing it in USA.
So, don't really understand what you're asking.

CarPlay for BMW changed to a subscription service in NA. It's no longer offered with a one time fee of $300. You now get the first year free and it's a subscription service afterwards.

Ridiculous. Wonder what else they'll try to put on subscription. Seat warmer subscription? Comfort access subscription?

If I don't pay for my seat warmers will they take that away?

Agreed. It implies that they are having some kind of continuing cost that they want to recover. Makes me wonder if  is charging them some kind of continuing fee. I have a Ford that came with  play, and Ford Did not and does not charge for it.

Seems like all it is is hardware that communicates with the phone. Similar to Sirus hardware. Sirus charges for it, but no car manufacturer does.

It's just software that runs on the iDrive system. When it was not subscription based you could either pay $300 up front or if you didn't get it and later decided you wanted CarPlay you could simply purchase it via iDrive and it would be activated.

Yeah, sw vs hw. Principal is still the same. Maybe they have to update the software periodically, but I have never recognized Ford doing that. If they do, they sure do it ‘quietly’

As the newer iDrives starts integrating wireless updates, there is cost involve with developing and updating the revised Apple software.

It's not a one time, done program anymore. It's constantly changing and BMW is just passing the cost along.

I'm not defending a corporation but I get the reason behind the rhyme.

Apple doesn't charge a licensing fee for carplay. BMW pays nothing other than the hardware to support the software. So no chance there is $80 worth of improvements per year that are being passed along. Apple also doesn't allow manufacturers to modify it's software so there really isn't any cost for BMW. It's simply a cash grab.

I sincerely doubt there is no cost involved; Apple or BMW are not charities.

The fact that there's a annual fee and it's integrated into the iDrive interface, that's now going to get updated wirelessly, ensures that it's always going to have the latest software, which would include revised versions of CarPlay.

+1

Could also make the argument that Apple doesn't charge anything to update your iPhone so why charge for this. IMO it's just one more way to make more $$$ and more importantly turn these transactions into yearly profits to show how profitable they are year over year.

I guess they see the cost of transferring new software updates via the vehicle's built-in 4G AT&T network as perceived value and cost.

Or maybe I'm just a sucker but either way; CarPlay sucks and wouldn't use or pay for it anyhow.

I don't even like using that "Phone" feature in my iPhone. I tried deleting that green APP but it won't disappear

CarPlay does suck. Used it couple of times before giving up on its intrusiveness to iDrive. Haven't touched it since.

CarPlay is part of the phone OS. Every Apple phone has it whether you use it or not. BMW is charging for their costs to integrate it into iDrive which is fine as an initial cost added to the retail price of the car but I fail to see how they can justify charging annually for something that came installed in the car on day one and is never upgraded or patched by BMW because any changes or patches after you purchase the car are done by Apple for free such as the refresh coming this fall;

They don’t really need to justify it. Unfortunately, many traditional purchases are moving to subscriptions. If you don’t want to pay for it, then don’t. I won’t.

As far as I am aware, no other car manufacturer charges for CarPlay, other than the initial option selection fee, if they offer it. It seems most manufacturers are going the opposite direction in including it, much like a stereo or Bluetooth. I mean how would you feel if BMW turned off Bluetooth every year unless you paid? Seems ridiculous to me.
