I was under the impression that this convo was about the models after March 2019 with the new ECU bootloader. If they can flash them with a normal enet to OBD on those cars then it is a breakthrough. If it's enet to some pigtail to splice into the ECU directly then that is not a breakthrough, it's a bench flash.

At least now, if this is true, you don't have to remove the ECU and crack open the factory seal..

That might need seem like a big deal to some but to the anal types like myself, it's a breakthrough, even if it's still classified as a bench flash..

I didn't realize that they had to physically open the case. I thought that they just hooked to certain pins on the module.

Bench flash requires opening the ECU, as far as I understand...

no need for this anymore…
you can benchunlock it through the DME connectors directly...they just move the intercooler a bit to get to the connectors...everything else stays in place.

Remove the charge air cooler that sits on top? Then you could access the connectors ?

Of course the trick is having a shop near you that can actually do a bench flash. As I've said before, I don't understand why there are so few shops that can do this.

This!!! It's been my frustration I'm not sure why shops refuse to learn how to bench tune. So much business lost I just don't get it

Let me know if you find any resources on bench tuning. I want to begin learning it for fun. From what i have seen online from shops is that they use a very expensive tool to do most of the work and they use the platform/tool to upload the old boot loader version. Most shops just dont have to invest in this tool.

I just visited one of my local BMW performance shops in Seattle area and got some baseline dyno pulls and they said they can bench flash my M2C anytime and gave me a quote. Pretty awesome. Gonna do it in the near future.

Hey. What was the shop that will do this? I'm in Seattle and need to have this done. Haven't been able to find one yet.

22RPD in Renton. I’m also trying to set up a group buy soon since they’ll offer a discount that way, and will be posting the details in the Regional Northwest section.

Nice! I'll look out for the post. I'm actually in Issaquah. I wonder if the tuners are legitimately working on the ODBII unlock. There's so many of us out there. Dealer updated my '19 and now I have a useless BM3 license and not nearly as in love with the car.

I created the group buy thread today to see how many are interested. Check it out in the Northwest region forum.

On a sidenote, my concern is that it’s been nearly a year since that software locked our DME, and still no solution yet via OBDII. In theory, I would much prefer a tune like bootmod3 because I have full control over flashing or reverting to stock as I please and within minutes anytime anywhere.
However, I’m discouraged by the time it’s taking, or whether to tuners are actively working on this or not. No word from anyone.....This is why I’m leaning towards just having the bench flash done.

One benefit of the bench flash dyno tune, is that they will tune everything to your car individually and that can generally extract more power because everything is tailored to your car not a general map.

That’s one of my biggest fears when it comes to modding and my car only has 4K miles on it as well.

Question is: will BMW investigate if he had mods or just go ahead and fix it without a hassle? If they void his warranty, it could be a very expensive out of pocket repair bill.

I suppose at the end of the day, modding is simply a risk we all take when it comes to warranty and also the crank hub issue might have happened to him at some point regardless. Since it has happened to stock cars as well, it’s unclear whether mods accelerate the process or not. But if they find out, I’m sure BMW will try to void the warranty to avoid paying for it.

(Please correct if I am wrong) From what I have read and understand the typical situation (not money shifts or over revving) is the crank hub slips a little. This throws the timing off and the computer puts the car into limp mode or if it has slipped enough it prevents the car from starting. This is done to prevent any internal engine damage. BMW then has to replace the crank hub, bolt and retime the engine.

Does anyone have an accurate repair bill from BMW when their car has gone into limp mode or not starting from the crank hub slipping? What was replaced/repaired?

That would be the deciding factor for me in any pre-warranty expiration mods. From my understanding we are not talking about total engine replacement just a new crank hub, bolt and re-timing.

PMd Andrew, OBD flashing is not an option. As other have mentioned, a harness connecting directly to the ECU will still be needed.
The wait continues... may get impatient though and go ahead with this method of flashing.

Sorry for the miscommunication. We are working on it though.
