I only skimmed through the article, but it did mention a detuned S58 but with less horsepower than an M2 CS and slower 0-60. Release in 2022 but most likely late in the year. So over 2 and a half years away.

I was hardcore hating on the new 2GC, but the G87 M2 render actually looks great. Very interesting. Especially the mentions of the engine.

7200 rpm, that's lower than the S55. Albeit I rarely rev it all the way out, but 7200 is kinda low IMO. My 30 year old Miata revs to 7500 lol...

They are leaving room to add an M2 Competition and later an M2CS.

Great news that the articles says that there will still be M2 production at the Leipzig plant in Germany for the UK market.Hopefully this means that people in the US and Canada will still be able to get a German M2 if they want to do ED.

Makes sense. G87 next-generation M2 CS probably not until 2024, 2025 or later. Not anytime soon. Obviously with inflation more than this year's F87 M2 CS.

The part in the article that bugged me the most was that the G87 M2 would be bigger and heavier. That was expected....

It kills me that every gen is bigger and heavier. Probably because 85% of buyers dont care about those as long as they are more luxurious. And then BMW keeps building newer models to fill voids and go smaller. What series number are left now? BMW M0?

It needs to be a shorter wheelbase and a lot lighter my competition m2 is to heavy at 1635 kg. My wifes x1 2.5xdrive is lighter then my m2c

I hope these guys are right about that because SCOTT26 has already mentioned a few times that the kidney grille will be quite large but not as large as the G80 M3 and G82 M4.

The Grand Coupé version is going to be based on a different platform (CLAR VS FAAR) to the M2 Coupé...can they really give it the same model designation if it’s a different platform? Are there any other examples of this, I can’t think of one? This is where their recent(ish) splitting of model numbers starts to confuse things

I know you want to believe that M2? But no. It's as different to Gran Coupe as Active Tourer is to today's Coupe.

I’m just referring to the kidney grille size of the new M2 depicted in the rendering that is shown in the article.Didn’t you earlier confirm that the new G42 2 series will have a large kidney grille design?

O yes so exciting about the upcoming M2

Base should have at least 430hp and at least 450hp for the Comp, don't want to get shafted by that A45 or RS3 on the straight do we?

Gimme that 1M testosterone-charged flared fender goldilocks look

I want to fit that 275 donut front and a 295/305 donut back too so give it room for the suspension to move without rubbing

Last thing keep that thing short, I don't wanna a freaking boat like the current M4

A manual gearbox option is a must

I'm sure there next M2 will be fantastic, and a bit more luxurious. I know everyone says every generation is less connected to the road than the one before, but performance always seems to improve. I do hope they ensure that it looks less generic than this photo, and make the front and rear look proportional.

To be fair: with stock turbos there's no point going over 6.500 rpm. That will most likely the optimal gearing point even with Stage 1 software.

But I get your point and in general agree with it.

It's particularly sad for the M2, which (I believe) was supposed to be the anti-modern M car; a throwback to the E36 days. That lasted about 3 years.

I'm sure the cars that get referenced from "back in the day" were/are great to drive, but how much of the legendary status is based upon fading memory that only recalls the very best of times? Most reviews of the old legends are based on short drives through some twisty B roads. Hey, who doesn't enjoy that. It's never the m3 CSL was the greatest DD that BMW produced for hauling the kids, going on long trips, etc etc.

I've never driven the M3 CSL, but it does not look like something I'd want to hop in every day as it appears to be a little uncomfortable and a little too loud in the cabin for extended drives. There's a much higher tolerance for negative aspects on a weekend warrior than there is for a DD.

I don't necessarily want BMW to recapture the old legends because I believ they've created better all around daily drivers while exceeding past performance metrics. Yes, hydraulic steering feel is tough to give up, n another decade most will not have a reference point. And it will be just us old people talking to the hipsters about how it used to be back in the day.

The e36 is still dominating track days and race series. I love watching the reaction from C7 drivers when a 20 year old BMW takes them to gapplebees.

There were a couple that would run track days at Barber in Birmingham when I was running my Miata. They were fast. They were all modded, but still, a great platform as they were already lightweight from the factory. Pull out the interior, new wheels, work the motor, etc. Nice toy.
