BMW Performance Center delivery/road trip tips?

Hello everyone,

Been on this sub-forum looking to order an M2 and it finally happened thanks to you guys, special thanks to ADDONE. The car reached "at the port" status this morning

I'll be doing the BMW Performance Center delivery in South Carolina and driving her all the way back to California. What are some recommendations from your experience? I'm not sure what to expect as it's my first delivery and road trip longer than LA - Las Vegas lol.

Besides your average packing, I'll be taking a roll of trakktape recommended by KevinM on a separate thread, thank you and a Valentine 1 gen 2 detector if it arrives on time as it's on backorder at the moment. Am I missing anything?

Break-in period will be performed in Texas, undecided as to which dealer.

I'll be posting a separate thread in the regional forums for some canyons roads to take on the way back. It would be awesome to start a meet/drive with some members during the process from each state.

Thank you in advance. I can't wait !

Sounds like an epic adventure. Check out Cherohala Skyway in NC on the trip home...

Congrats! I have done PC deliveries before and being from Dallas that is around 1,000 miles if you do Tail of the Dragon

What I have done is take delivery; head to the Tail and then spend the night in Chattanooga. Next day to Dallas.

Classic BMW in Plano, TX is a good place to get the service done...

Have fun....

I bring blue painters tape and tape off the front bumper, hood and mirrors. I do multiple layers so I don't return home with 50 rock chips.

Awesome! See thread in my sig re my M4 cross-country road trip last summer. So many different routes...hard to say which is best. Honestly, hit the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Rockies, and Monument Valley (I didn't do that last summer, had already seen it). Also, pay attention as you cross the country...you really can see the difference between the eastern (or southern) forests, the midwest, the transition to the plains and then to the Rockies or the desert southwest. Some of the changes are stark and some are subtle but it helps give this vast country a lot of perspective. Another thing you may notice, people outside of California can seem overly nice and friendly...don't be surprised by, or suspicious of, it...most Americans are just genuinely nice people.

Make sure you plan out the break-in service.

I drove my car with only its ceramic coating and it just got very minor rock chips. Worst that happened was me slightly scuffing the splitter at the end of a long day.

I may also be doing this with the M2C I have on order. We'll see.

Is the Performance Center following any restrictions/any of the events unavailable due to COVID? I have an IOU to go as I was supposed to go back in April but I wouldn't have been able to do much of anything that the delivery experience offers.

Last I checked a few weeks ago, the only thing I heard was not available was the factory tours. Everything else is still on.

New rule is everyone gets their own car. But they do not require masks...which is interesting, but it is South Carolina 😉

I'll be watching this thread! My Euro Delivery may turn into a South Carolina delivery. I like the tape idea but has anyone gotten PPF in SC prior to the drive? My only concern would be warranty?

Close to the performance center, there is "Extreme Colors Auto Spa". This is where the performance center does their PPF.

They offer pretty quick turnaround service. But because they're the only game in town and they know people who do PCD usually like to have their cars wrapped. They charge a pretty penny. But it all depends if it is worth it or not. Alternatively, you can drive a hour or two away for other authorized installers. But they usually take multiple days if you can get an appt.

Not sure about that? Two weeks ago there was a Sandlapper Chapter autocross at the PC, and masks were mandatory anytime outside your car.

Hey, I'm with you and it will put me at ease if masks were mandatory outside of cars. When I called a few weeks back, they said it was not. Maybe things have changed. If that was the case, I would have totally done PCD again.

Here is the Covid guidelines for performance center. Other than BMW's thermal location, masks are not required indoors. Seem strange as people are often closer indoors than outdoors...

I'm wondering if that was a mistype and they meant 'outside' the building which of course would make far more sense. Then again, it does mention requiring them inside the Thermal facility. Crazy stuff...sadly.

Please note that the BMW Performance Center is closely monitoring the developments regarding COVID-19 (Coronavirus). This is an unprecedented national health emergency and we will continue to develop and adjust our plans as necessary. Currently BMW Manufacturing has informed us they have suspended all factory tours and a tour will not be available on the day of your delivery. Also, all guests will be asked to wear a mask during the vehicle overview, while touring the BMW Museum and when social distancing of 6 feet or more is not possible. You may choose to bring your own mask, or one can be provided to you upon arrival to the BMW Performance Center.

Due to the constantly changing environment surrounding COVID-19, we do not recommend making any travel arrangements until 2 weeks prior to your delivery date. If we encounter delays due to COVID-19 closures, production schedules, weather, or any other unforeseeable circumstances, your delivery date may need to be changed prior to that 2-week window. If we are notified of a delay, we will contact you immediately to arrange a new delivery date.

Did your car already arrive on US port? I was told PCD dates are not assigned until the car goes through customs. If that is the case, wow, what a long wait!

The wait is longer now since they're working with reduced volume and staffing to allow for social distancing. My car will arrive in Charleston on 8/16, but delivery is 9/11. The wait has been shorter in the past, but it's worth the wait!

My bmw garage status is "quality check". I know the status in my Bmw garage is a bit delayed, but CA reached out this week and asked if 10/8 would work as that was the earliest PCD available. Timing is fine as I'm in no rush and hopefully we get some better financing options from bmw for the my 21s by then.

Got my email from Perf Center confirming the date. Unless of course there are changes due to pandemic...

JCZ5 Any chance you could elaborate on “everyone gets their own car?”
You just follow someone instead of having an instructor in the car?

I can only assume since the website does not offer any specific details. But pre-Covid, you have two driving programs. One was to do the track course with the vehicle you purchased, the other was to take the X5 on the off road course. For many doing PCD, they chose the X5. Therefore, in those two programs, you usually went into a different X5 for both programs since you choose the car on their lot. I assume since covid, you will be assigned a X5 for the day.

My other assumption is people in your party would also get their own vehicles, but that does not necessary make too much sense.

Apologies, but just going off what I know previously

For PCD, one generally shares a car with one's guest. The instructor communicates via radio in each car. On the skid pad, you and your guest take turns driving with the instructor in the passenger seat. For the hot lap, the instructor drives, while you and your guest either grin from ear to ear or wish you had worn a diaper.

My hunch is that since you choose your own (presumably healthy) guest for pcd, cars are still shared. For paid classes (I've only done one), I believe they now have each student in his/her assigned car vs sharing with another student.
