Any time BMW talks about weight savings it is lol worthy.... you cannot make the F87 / F80 chassis meaningfully lighter without pulling out significant components out of the car... if they put in lightweight seats, no stereo, lighter thin glass, lightweight battery, swapped out trunk, roof and hood with CF, stripped any insulation and pulled out back seats, then you may have a lighter weight that actually matters... but is that a car that people would actually want to daily drive?
And, just as important, is that a car that people would actually buy at the significantly higher price point?

While Porsche has been quite successful at offering less for more, in the case of BMW, not so much

As a result, I think that's why we're seeing things like merino leather, power seats, HK stereo, and so on on the M2 CS

If BMW had simply swapped the power seats for manual and the standard battery for lithium, they probably would have shaved as much, if not, more weight than they have

I agree... I think Porsche has been very successful but that is a much different price point, the cars are rarer, have better resale value and are far more track used so I don't think its a fair comparison.

My honest opinion is that there should be 2 versions of the track M cars... a standard and a GTS for the hardcore people... everything in between is a marketing / money grab.

As it stands now, for people that are truly interested in the performance aspects of the car and not show-go, the M2C is the value pick and the M2 CS is the all out premium pick.
See here for my (similar) take on it:

Rumor has it (surfaced in January 2016) that an N55 M2 and S55 M2 were actually developed side-by-side, or at least within a small time window. The N55 M2 was supposed to be named "M2". And that happened. The S55 M2 was supposed to be called "M2 CS", due for release around 2018. And that did not happen: things took a turn in 2018 because of EU emissions homologation requirements taking force in September 2018 in Europe. Result: exit the N55 M2 and rebaptizing the S55 M2 as "M2 Competition". During the Summer of 2018: exit + enter. In VIN decoders exactly the same pre-production S55 M2 got labelled "M2 CS" and at some other point in time "M2 Competition". We may reasonably assume that the S55 M2 (temporary dubbed "M2 CS") that turned "M2 Competition", was not supposed to be sold at near-base-M2 price. But the problem was that there was no entry-level BMW M car anymore with the N55 M2 being retired. So the M2 Competition unexpectedly 'dropped' into the entry-level BMW M car position, with an attractive price. That's also why the M2 Competition will continue to be regarded as excellent value for money. Also from a price perspective, the M2 Competition stole the 450hp 2020 M2 CS thunder: if the M2 Competition would have been priced somewhere in the middle between base M2 price and base M4 price, the 2020 M2 CS price would be a little less hard to stomach.

Though this rumor has never been confirmed, M2 Competition owners may occasionally come across car parts featuring "M2 CS" stamped on it.

I put zero down and with the deal I got I am paying a whole £7 a month more on my PCP monthly than I was on my 2017 CP F80 with 30k miles on the clock.
Not sure what the future holds for the F8x but there does seem to be some good deals out there to be had on the CS models for now.
For anyone who is dreaming about getting into one keep at it! As when I started this thread the cars were going for double my budget and now I am the owner of one. I hope others here can have the same luck I did and end up in what I must admit is a dream car for most.

Why are dealerships continuing to order the M4CS? My dealer has two 2020 models on the lot. Is BMW subsidizing them up front?

Yeah seriously?

My dealer has 3 of them lined up in front of the store.

Too bad they weren't offered in manual....that's just a deal breaker for me!

Maybe all you potential M2cs purchasers should just go out and grab a 1M 🤣

Not as much bling...but, that's just the point!

I test drove the 1M in 2015 when I got my 981 CS, and it was a lot less impressive then as compared to 2012 when I first drove one. It’s great for what it is, except the face, but the world spins on and gets better. Always liked the M2 over the 1M. The CS should be on a different performance planet, and it should be (no dig at the 1M).

I just realized that my front license plate mount (US) is stamped M2 CS in the back. Interesting little fact you pointed out.

Can you post a picture so that I can add it ?

What was seen cannot be unseen: I recall having seen once a post showing a car part saying "CS" + the owner cracking the joke that his F87 is a CS. But I did not retrieve yet the picture. It's somewhere out there in the dungeons of the M2 section.

No dig/offense taken.

The 1M is nearly decade old, I would fully expect more recently designed cars to perform better at every level

Unfortunately, these days many of the new offerings leave that connected visceral driving experience out.

The 1M is special in that it is simple and straight forward...no frills, no bling...but, incredible driving experience.

If the the 1M is a unicorn, then the word has lost all meaning. There is another one on sale every couple of weeks on BaT alone.
Well, there are just about 3-4 e46 M3's on BAT just about every week....in comparison, yeah it's certainly more rare. However, that does not mean one can't be had.

When you do a search for a 1M on just about any site you're going to find about 20 at any given time. That's a far cry from the hundreds of M2's, 3's, 4's, 5's, ect.
