I'm still skeptical for the U.S. market. It's just not a smart strategy for BMW to offer CarPlay to the exclusion of the competition. Then again, BMW isn't very good at strategizing with its electronics ...
Honestly, the only thing I'd want from my phone is Waze. And from my understanding, this does not work on Android Auto?

I still will get the new iDrive (on the M3 though). The new system is really damn nice

I believe they just announced Waze is coming to Android Auto. No word on when it will be released, but they just showed it at Google I/O.

Now this would be useful. Hopefully that happens!

Google has owned Waze since 2013 and recently incorporated support for it into Android Auto. If BMW decides not to use it due to continued pressure from Apple, there is a standalone Android Auto app available.

BMW was one of the first manufacturers to work with Apple on Carplay this has been known since Carplay was first announced so I am not surprised to see it being offered. I will guess that it will be standard in the US market. Most manufacturers that are offering one are offering the other so I also won't be surprised if BMW does the same.

They already explicitly said they will support both last year, so that's not in question. The question is when? Leaving that bit out allows them to kick the can down the road.

Indeed. It's interesting because the 5.0 product bulletin clearly states that cars built in July forward will have new system, but Apple CarPlay will not be available until an estimated date of September. Leaves lots of room for them to move it around it needed.

Have a feeling the reason why Apple car play will be available until September is that's the date were apple usually launches new iPhone and iOS so it might coincide with the release of the new Apple products with the capability of wireless CarPlay just a guess though

Will it be compatible with Android auto as well? Or can we just get an update later when it does in the future?

Quite possible. Rumours that new car play features coming in iOS 10.

No one knows. Only their initial announcement for support without a stated time to implement.

This is very, very observant. Kudos. In fact, I'm surprised BMW let this slip (and I bet Apple does all it can to make BMW delete it in the coming days).

We can all pretty much bank on the fact that the iPhone 7 will have wireless charging.

Unfortunately no rumors whatsoever that the iPhone 7 will support wireless charging. Lots of cars have added wireless charging, just the natural progression of things. Great for android users I guess.

That doesn't mean a damn thing. Consider that:
- BMW has a long-standing agreement with Apple to develop and implement accessories and functionality for iDevices, and
- Android Auto hasn't even been mentioned as being supported by iDrive 5.0. Only CarPlay has.

As I'm sure you know, rumors several months out about new iDevices are incorrect more often than they're correct.

Granted, a counterpoint to the above would be that wireless charging is device-dependent as well as OS dependent. But why tout the capability at all, this far in advance, if the preferred mobile platform for your vehicle won't be able to take advantage of it?

Anything is possible but usually by summertime we have a pretty good idea of the major changes and hardware of the iPhone. Wireless charging is not on the radar thus far, but it is for 2017, likely the next phone. Perhaps they'll surprise us though, would be nice.

Here's a big let down. Was just at the dealer buying an M235i and just verified with BMW Genius that BMW did not make a mistake in excluding it, and iDrive 5.0 WON'T be coming for MY17 M2.

That's weird. In the new pricelist (from May 16) it says that it will come with Apple Carplay and the wireless charging. Especially the first (Apple Carplay) will be more likely a new "app" for the system which I think will be integrated with iDrive 5.0. So I still think that the update will be here very soon. We'll see when the first M2s are delivered in Germany this July.

He could have been referring to the hardware (controller buttons, more ram, higher-res screen) when he said no changes. Even though I specifically asked about iDrive 5.0

Wouldn't be the first time a BMW genius is wrong

Update: my friend said BMW just sent them a bulletin yesterday that the 2 series will not get iDrive 5.0 but will still get apple car play.

Would love to see the bulletin.

The Canadian bulletin, posted here for all to see, says 5.0 is coming to the 2 series.
