Bummer.

My M2 came through with Continental ContiContact3 tires and NOT the Michelin PSS.

Double bummer.
Are they still building M2's with the faulty diff?
There has been no evidence to indicate with any confidence that a 2017 being delivered has a good differential.

Right there with you!! My '17 has the Conti's.... And I'm not so fond of them. I've experienced the "oh sh!t what part of my car is dragging on the pavement" noise once in the 1,500 miles I've driven. It was early on, and it hasn't repeated, but it was pretty unpleasant.

Anyway, double bummer.

Other than that... I absolutely LOVE this car.

(But other than that, how did you like the parade, Mrs. Kennedy?)

I had my VIN checked in DCS by a friend at the dealer and I don't have the diff campaign in the system.

I'd heard the 17's may get Contis, but this is the first concrete proof I've heard of it.

I'd take it up with the dealer TBH, the car is specifically advertised as having PSS's and the alternative is far inferior.

pretty sure it's never been advertised as such. Even the marketing materials from before launch show "mixed tyres".

I don't think it was ever officially advertised.

Yes they did. When you configured the MY16's they talked up the "exclusive" and "unique" PSS's that were designed specifically for the M2, blah blah, marketing blah blah.

The website has been scrubbed of that since.

Sucks for anyone getting the Conti's, those tires are crap.

Mine either, but it sounds like the diff leaves parts on the ground.

Do any of you stating that the "can noise" is due to bad diff actually have this from a reliable source? I have a early 17 with this noise. Dealer say this sound is normal to the m2. No recall as far as I know and I did 2000 km service.

Would also be interesting to hear from any with replacement diffs, do they make the same sound??

well my diff was replaced. The old diff made no noises/sounds after 1900 km.

Then i got the new diff. And so far I have only driven 50 km. And no noises.

So...

this might not be the correct forum, but I have a friend with an e46 M3. His diff makes noises at low speed when turning. Does not make any noise at WOT in a straight line.
Makes me thinnk this is normal for BMW. or is it?

I'm starting to think that this sound is normal, but heck do I know for certain. What I would like is for the members in here stating the opposite to elaborate on sources and what their comments are based on.

It is not normal and I have worked on diffs for a loooong time. It's a different sound, but not normal. To me, it is not a ring and pinion issue but more likely the variable lock up unit in the diff that puts pressure on the spider gears.

MY2016 were PSS only. MY2017 can be either and didn't advertise PSS.

Exactly.

its quite common for " Standard equipment " to change from year to year. on nearly any auto from nearly any manufacturer.

2016 BMW M2 got PSS and 4 year included maintenance..

2017 BMW M2 gets Apple car play as standard,
Along with wireless charging and now has two possible options for tires and has reduced maintenance.

Owners of 2016s can't request or demand Apple car play and owners of 2017s get CarPlay and can't demand the 2016 maintenance package and will receive one of the two tire options.

Same story different options with the M4 which got a standard suspension in 2016 and now the 2017 gets the adaptive suspension stock.

Changing to different tires on a new model year is a way of raising their price. Kind of like, groceries that come in smaller containers but keeping the same price point.

Actually that's not correct. More than likely the chance is to offset an additional expense.

For example on the M2 the wireless charging and the Apple car play features don't come for "free". The base price of the car is the same but the cost of these options is also a part of why likely a lesser expensive OE tire option is fitted.

Your car is a tweener anyway because the first few months of 17 production don't have CarPlay but iirc it's been announced that a retrofit is available for the early 17s that were shipped without. Don't quote me on that ..
