Not necessarily, the f80/82 aren't built in the same plant as the M2.

Different plants, so not really. Also, no one ever said they're intentionally limiting. They physically can't crank out more due to plant limitations.

But this sure is a whole lotta cars

I just PMed my VIN to Driver37. My wife's M2 finished production on June 5. With that date it is in the time frame of having an issue. We picked it up in Munich on July 12. IF it is on the list we are fortunate this did not come to light prior to our delivery.

There is a thread in another forum where someone showed up at the Welt to pick up their M3 for their European vacation. BMW woouldn't release the M3 due to the stop delivery. They were offered him a 7 series stretch which he turned down as way to big. They then found him a 535d Touring. Poor guy. And, he was headed to the Ring. Nightmare.

It's a screeching metallic sound of some metal part rubbing against another metallic part for more than an instant. A kind of metallic rambling (or some rambling inside a metallic box) for a few moments (a second or so) rather than just some brief clunk. Happens at random, sometimes twice right after each other. Mostly when the car is not under load (for example cruising at slow speed or after coming out of a turn). It sounds as if some part moves in a controlled way from one side to another (opening or closing of a part) but with an awful rambling noise. Always exactly the same sound. I even got used to it ("Oh, here it goes again"). As far as I experienced, no impact on the driving itself.

Very weird. Never heard that on any ///M car I ever drove. And no, it ain't the opening/closing of the butterfly valve of the M Performance Exhaust (totally different sound) nor the notorious 'cow bell sound' phenomenon caused by pebbles that got inside the brake system. I suspect the diff performing weird stuff.

I told my dealer. He reported it to BMW. He saw in the system a notice about (normal) screechy sounds at slow speed during break-in: bedding in of the brakes during the first 500km. Definitely something else.

My car is an early April 2016 build.
I have been hearing this a lot and just chauked it up to being the cowbell-rock in the dust shield. Now I'm not so sure because I have heard this 10 times more in the couple months of ownership of the M2 than the 5 years with the 1M. My car is an early hea car delivered in april. It sat at the port for a month or two before delivery. Could it go this far back?

I've heard it about 5-10 times in 2 months. It's exactly how it's described there. Slow speeds during light breaking. Not too worried. If anything's wrong it'll be under warranty, but I don't think it's not something that would have been missed during testing.

I hear it no more on my M2 than my 2 year old M4. Not saying your car (or mine) won't be impacted by the recall but if it's the sound being described here, it impacts M cars back years. A differential noise will almost always present itself when turning slowing. The sound described above happens randomly and when driving in a straight line sometimes. That's why I keep thinking it isn't a differential noise. Who knows, maybe it is... none of us are techs

Most definitely this! I had 2 E46 M3s and the rear diff was the nosiest thing ever on a cold start and making a left turn. My buddy still has his E46 M3 and his is as noisy as both of mine were. Its a Whirring noise more than a screeching noise.

Am afraid this would make the M2 less interesting to produce more, for BMW!!!!

What year E46 M3?I didn't hear any noises from the rear differential in my
2005 E46 M3 and I owned the car for eleven years.

My two were 02 and 01 and my friend's is an 03 (pre LCI - so no LED tail lights). It sounded like the tires were rubbing in the rear and would make this Whirring noise. In reading the forums back then, it was normal. I even had my Diff fluid changed on both, but it didn't help.

Edit: Is the quote function messed up on this forum today or what? Everytime I post a reply with a quote, it quotes the wrong person.

I had an E46 M3 manual as well as an E46 M3 SMGII and a 1M.

I can assure that I never heard the described M2 ramble on those cars. And yes, I'm familiar with the notorious E46 M3 'clunk'.

I think the recall for the E46 M3's was for the 2000 to 2002, something to do with the rear axle, maybe the differencial !!!!!

Driver37 got back to me (immediately) and verified that our M2 is on the list. I have also read two different threads where buyers showed up at the Welt to pick up their cars (one M2 and one M3) and were denied their cars. They were both loaned 530d wagons for their ED drives. This first occurred on July 19; one week before we picked ours up at the Welt on July 12. Too close for comfort.

Am i correct in thinking that if my M2 was just released to the carrier that it won't have this issue?

If your car is getting on the boat to the UK they are probably going to hold it at your port/vehicle processing center to fix it. My car has been stuck at the VPC since July 7. They will not deliver it to the dealer.

I got a call today to say my car arrives at the dealership tomorrow and have arranged pick up on Saturday.
I'm hoping this turns out to be the case, however from everything I'm reading I partly expect a "sorry we made a mistake" call tomorrow ...

That's what happened to me - was scheduled to pick up and day before was told I couldn't. The stop-delivery for the M2 is worldwide, so I don't see how your dealer would let you pick it up. Make sure to call them and confirm so you don't run into any disappointments come the weekend.
