Michelin Alpin Stock Size Rubbing a Bit
What's up Guys !
most likely this was already addressed in this Forum but i just installed Michelin Alpin on my M2C with stock size ( rims 788m) 245/35/19 and 265/35/19 and well it rubs a bit on both sides while reversing with some lock( not even full Lock ) not a major Rub , i checked and it's a Minute trace on the plastic of the wheel well . so my question is it a common thing with these tires, i was really expecting a perfect fit but i assume that the Thread is so Thick that it was bound to happen, i have seen some guys running 255/35/19 up front but with other with other Winter tires brands, i can deal with it because it is only while reversing and i hope with use the thread will get a bit thinner with time thank you |

Yep they're wide - hence BMW advising square 235's for winter, on 8.5 front/9 rear rims
I've got this setup (Pilot Alpin 4, 235) on 641m rims, no rubbing of course it doesn't help you but if you can return/exchange them, and go narrower, I would (but I guess you'll have to use something else than the 788m)

It must be really close, because I run the same setup and it doesn't rub for me. Might go away as the tire wears. |

From my understanding M2c tends to rub more from heat exchange outlet that’s different from M2?
I did put 235/35 on my 9 in wheels.. very pinched but…. Great clearance for snow buildip |

On the front that is true. I do have a 2021 M2C but have no rubbing issue, not sure why.

This has been covered in other posts with mixed responses; some says that is rubs constantly, while others say that there is no issue at all. I think it has to do with the tolerances of the wheel liners in the wheel-well themselves. I work with a plastics supplier in the auto industry who supplies these wheel liners to other vehicles, and they said that it's not uncommon for these huge wheel liners to have tolerances of +/-7.5mm in areas that are not supported by the fasteners. BMW/German tolerances are most likely tighter controlled, but I still wouldn't be surprised if it was still +/-5mm for certain areas on a large plastic part like this. Your M2 might have the liners that are closer to the edge of the spec and therefore it rubs with the stock tire sizes with winter tires, versus mine and others might have liners that are closer to the nominal design that do not rub. Another note is that every vehicle in Europe must have a tire and wheel combination that can accept tire chains as per regulations. This is most likely why BMW recommends the 235/35/19 setup so that the slightly smaller tie can clear the wheel liner with the chains installed. This is something that is taken into consideration early in the initial design stages of vehicle design. This makes the most logical sense to me based on the info that I have, but what do I know, I'm only a lonely engineer

I have Alpin 4 255/35/19 in the front and Alpin 5 275/35/19 in the rear that I'm using from my old f82. It has an ever so subtle rub near lock. After about 1k miles, it still only has the most minimal little mark on the front fenders like you said.

I have the same setup as OP (Michelin Alpin in stock sizes on a stock suspension on 788Ms).
And I have the same rubbing problem. It drives me nuts, but I ran them last winter and it was fine - just put them on for this winter and same thing. It’s only when reversing out of the driveway - doesn’t need to be full lock. I bought the 788Ms used specifically for a winter wheels setup, and I’m kicking myself for not checking on all this first. Silly me for assuming that the winter wheels/tires in stock tire sizes on stock wheels on stock suspension would be fine, I guess.

Slight rubbing when reversing, doesn't bother me in the least. Awesome grip in the cold when dry, not the best in snow.

Just came back to update. I've driven probably just under 5k miles now on the front 255/35/19 PA4 and that slight rub still hasn't done any damage. Just the faintest little small mark that a different person probably wouldn't even recognize

That should work just fine as far as I know because the winter tire is much fatter than the summer. I can't wait to put my 763Ms back on in a could weeks. Although I'm gonna need a fresh set of cup2s as I burnt thru the rears last summer 🙃
