Finally, someone coming out with a DIY solution. It's still gonna be a PITA to do it on a S55 though since the DME is under the charge air cooler. Wish it was a OBDII solution, but I think I'm asking too much.

I’m guessing this is just for bench unlocking? Not for post 06/2020 cars?

IIRC their instagram also said they were working on compatability with post 06/2020 cars.

What great timing. Just had a surprise DME lock/update from the stealership this week that they masked as a iDrive recall fix. First bmw, and first and last time I’ll be taking it to a dealer for anything. I won’t even get into the bs they put me through.

Ready to tune this thing but now the dme lock is throwing a wrench in my plans lol!

MHD please take my money!

Been looking for a local shop that can bench unlock since I don't have a place to let my car sit if I rip out the DME and ship it to a shop. This would be amazing.

+1

Apparently dinan did it first with their hand held flasher for the b58, so MHD isn't doing anything new or special here.

Granted words mean nothing until they release a working product, but they specifically called out the M2C and M4C as an example of things to come "later":

...later we will add support for more cars like B58 GEN2 that are made pre 06/2020 or M2C / M4C that also require a bench unlock.

They're not doing anything clandestine, I'm sure your did get the I drive update and they thought they're doing you a good job by updating everything else too.

Just like windows updates, why not?

Ista just gives a list of modules to be updated and they press "go".

The only way to avoid it is never go to a dealer. But not many actually do that.

I did but it means fixing stuff yourself that could be warranty work, i was lucky no big issues in 3 years.

Well, update post from 7/23 dropped mention of M2C/M4C and they are ignoring people in the comments asking about the S55 while actively responding to others...

RIP

It’s also worth noting that ISTA does not give you the option to selectively update certain modules. So, they cannot update iDrive components in isolation. If ISTA says the DME needs updating too, it does it at the same time. ISTA just reports the ‘ilevel’ update, which could be 30+ updates/tasks across 10 different modules at once. Like doughboy stated, it’s just an ‘update now’ option for them. This is intentional; ISTA is as idiot-proof as possible to ensure the dealerships don’t screw up your car’s software.

The only way to update modules individually is via something like E-Sys which dealerships don’t use, only tech engineers.

Yep, and the first step in any warranty or fault investigation is, you guessed it, "ensure vehicle is running latest software".

Even for mechanical defects, they still have to update.

So you take the car in for a dash rattle and they'll update it first before any warranty payments is made to them from bmw.

They wanted to update mine when it went in for its running in service, luckily she mentioned it as I'd booked a waiting appointment but she said it would be all day.

So i had to argue i had an important meeting and had to take the car quickly so only time for the oil change, i promised to book it back in ASAP and never did of course.
