How much inner clearance is enough for track use?
I just installed my 19" Apex EC-7RS in ET28 up front, recognizing that I might need 5mm spacers per Apex, due to my TracTive coilovers. I bought a set of Turner spacers just in case there was interference, but when I test fitted the wheels and tires, I have 5/16" of clearance at the closest spot between the coilover and the wheel/tire (it's right at the bead).
I track this car, and I have spherical bearings everywhere, so any flex would have to be at the hub, but one would expect that the outside loaded tire would be the one that would deflect the most, but that would deflect away from the coilover, not towards it. I did a test drive and did not notice any abnormal noises, as well. I would prefer not to run the spacer as the outer edge of the tire is poking out a bit beyond the fender, and I'm worried any more spacing would cause a new problem there. Thoughts? Is 5/16" clearance sufficient? Thanks Ash |

I wouldn’t be concerned with running 5/16”. That’s probably about all I have at the widest section of the front tire to the springs with some of the wider tires I run on track. Some tire pickup has left black marks on the spring, but no signs of actual tire to spring contact.
