first highway time in new M2...
took my new '18 MT on the highway today for the first time.... 80 mile round trip drive, average speed of about 80-85mph.
here are my impressions: 1) Whatever BMW engineer designed the ASD in this car should be summarily executed. It is pure torture. It is horrible. (Yes, i will be ordering the bypass) 2) Is it just me or does this car beg for a 7th gear (MT)??? (maybe the ASD is contributing to this impression?). |

The 3000 RPM MPE drone keeps me from going too fast on the highway
The limit here is typically 90kph so 110kph is still pretty safe and that's about 2600 RPM. Last edited by mr_lab_rat; 09-08-2018 at 11:54 PM.. |

Its not turned off, but it is quieter in Comfort mode. If it had remained at that level in the other drive modes, I might not have had to bypass it.

In my very first drive from the dealer I spent 3hrs highway in sport mode without knowledge of the ASD and I was thinking about how hard it would be to live with the car.
Then I learnt about how it worked and have to say that longer drives are not meant for sport mode. I think the car is really comfortable sound wise in comfort and quieter than my e92 335i with performance exhaust. There is no droning in my car and I don't mind the ASD at all except for longer drives.. |

It's the high gearing that contributes the most. I also read somewhere that there is less sound proofing in the M2 versus say the bigger M3/4.
IMHO they should've made the final ratio lower for cruising so that the engine isn't way up at 3k. Our X1 is just below 2k cruising at 70mph where the M2 sits around 2.5k. On the flip side, the higher gearing is very fun when you're not highway cruising so it's give and take. Miles of smiles with this car.

Why don't you guys just turn it off so you can drive in the mode you want when you want without being annoyed. I'm not sure at this point what bothers me more, ASD, or people leaving it on and not driving the car on the mode they want to be in because they can't be bothered to remove ASD!

There is drone even in comfort but I haven't done anything about it. Seems to be fine downhill with cruise on but as soon as any throttle is on in top gear around 3k you get loud drone. Even without considering the sound I think 6th should have been a full 1k rpm from 5th. As it is now there's barely a difference between 5th and 6th which makes me feel like it's little more than a 5 speed. My only complaint about the car is the gearing for 5th/6th being too short.

I added back the 2 series insulation and don't know what you guys are talking about. No drone at any speed in my M2.…..
