Stolen BMW Using a Laptop

Do you guys know if our car is vulnerable to some sort of hack? My friend's (E93) M3 was stolen out of the parking garage caught on camera using a laptop. This happened in the LA area. Based on my research there's 2 methods.

1) Using a signal extender
2) Reprogramming a blank key done through OBD port

Has any M2 been stolen where the thief was able to drive it away?

Fascinating. Can you be more specific as to the 2 methods.

1) Using a signal extender - What does this mean? Are you talking about getting in through the car's Wi-Fi or Bluetooth?
2) Reprogramming a blank key done through OBD port - How could this be done without the car's ignition being on?

Relay attack probably. We deal with this all the time when victims leave their key fobs close to their front doors-say on a table. Guy can come by and extend the key fobs distance through your door, activate it and take your car. We will find the car next day out of gas. Very simple,,,we can pull cctv and see the bad guys just walking by peoples homes with laptops out at the doors and another guy at the car w a receiver. Simple key fob protector will stop this. Just goto amazon and buy a faraday pouch.
Now your "friend" lost his car in a parking garage?? Ive no idea how that happened unless someone cloned him locking/unlocking his car-but i think that is near impossible these days and an urban legend. Google relay attack. You can see cctv videos on this.

Ive no idea what this odb port theory is.

just put your key fob in a aluminum box when your at home. But end of the day...any car can be stolen. its called tow truck.

I had a buddy with a integra type r a long time ago..who had a hidden fuel cut off switch, viper alarm system and he would take off the steering wheel and would take it with him.

They stole it from his drive way using a two truck lol.

think about it...anyone can buy a used bmw tow hook for $20 on ebay and none of the tow hook covers are locked.

Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) states that the BMW 3 series is the least stolen car for 2016-2018 model years. No car is unstealable, but doesn't look like it's too easy to walk away with one.

Easiest solution, what i do, is keep your fobs closed up in a tin can, it does the same job of blocking the signal as a faraday cage

You can test this by bring your tin can right up to the car and the car wont recognize and let you in

So no signal for the hacker to hack? No problem.. whether he has a laptop or a triquarter :-p

I could just stick it under my tin foil hat, right? It's been doing a great job keeping away the alien probes.

Although I'm sure there are ways to hack into our cars, I think a lot of it is urban lore, and quite frankly, I'd rather worry about something that I can actually do something about, like global warming.

LOL, j/k. I agree with the posters above - if someone wants to steal my car, the easiest way is to just tow it off.

I dont understand why you try bring this into some tin foil hat thing?

Its the same thing as ppl buying faraday pouches on amazon, this is just a easy home remedy

It just blocks off the signal your fob is emitting /receiving.. idk about urban lore but you just have to understand how the hacker is accessing your fob signal, if you block that, no harm no foul

I could see keeping my key fob in a faraday pouch when it's hanging on a hook 15' from my car. I wouldn't use it in my pocket since that kind of defeats the purpose of Comfort Access.

You were right though; car thieves doesn't "hotwire" vehicles anymore; they break the window, put it in Neutral and tow it off and away..

The CAS ignition system is too difficult and unpredictable to defeat, for the average car thief.

Most cars are stolen nowadays because the negligent owner left the keys in the vehicle.

OP, my uncle still uses a Clublock and my mother still believes cars need to warmed-up for over 15 mins, like it has a carburetor. I let them be because it helps them sleep better at night. If you want to hide your key fob in a pouch to prevent someone from stealing its RF signals, it won't hurt; you go for it

I live in a rather upscale town with one of the best (lowest) crime rates in the country for a medium-size city. I was chatting with a police office one day shortly after I moved there, teasing him because someone had gotten robbed and I said, "hey, I thought there was no crime here."

He gets off on a rant about "you people" and how they go for a walk, leaving the garage door open, leave the car running in the driveway, etc. and any crime that we do have is largely due to negligence, ignorance and of course, stupidity.

Now, I realize that my idyllic town is not typical and you folks in cities like London or Chicago where you may not have a place to garage the car and there are a lot of professional thieves there, will give you a totally different attitude and approach to keeping your car safe. I have a garage at home and at work I've got a guy in a SUV with "S E C U R I T Y" emblazoned on the sides who patrols the parking lot. So I don't worry much and sometimes my complacency shows in my replies when I forget how fortunate I am.
