Phone Mount/Holder Comparison
Since I took delivery of the M2, I noticed that there was not really any real provision to store a large phone such as a Nexus 6P or iPhone 7 Plus.
A phone this size does not fit too well in the arm rest compartment when you have other items in there, the tray behind the cup holders, and the cup holders themselves are not wide enough to accommodate such a phone. So I had a browse on Amazon, eBay and other sites for some solutions. I tried 4 different types of phone holder and finally settled on a solution that will not only hold my phone, but if needs be, a tablet too! I started with one of these. Initially I thought this was going to be the answer, it has strong magnets and was very easy to fit. But sadly the entire thing manages to work itself loose on longer journeys and falls out of position! So not a solution going forward. There are two reasons it falls out. My phone is heavy with its case! The prongs/legs of the product are not long enough for the M2 dash. The climate/entertainment controls are recessed into the dash which stops the prongs/legs from fitting correctly into the gap. I then tried a CD slot mount, it worked, but having the phone in this location left too many buttons obstructed, and I actually use CD's sometimes! Moving on a then purchased a RAM Mount Stubby Cup Holder Mount and a RAM Mount X-Grip and a RAM Short Double Socket Arm for B Size 1" Balls. The Stubby fits nicely in the cup holder, but I wasn't happy with the stability of the whole thing, it moved around quite a bit. But the location of the phone was ideal, it didn't obstruct any buttons etc. But I couldn't live with the stability of the whole thing. So again, not a proper solution! Finally I ordered a ProClip/Brodit Center Mount. This fits nicely and is secure, its not going anywhere. And also a ProClip/Brodit Standard Nexus 6P Holder. When the Nexus 6P Holer arrived I immediately realised that this isn't going to work for me as my case is quite large and I didn't want to remove the case every time I wanted to put the phone in the holder! The phone fits perfectly into the holder without the case, its a tight fit, so no chance of the phone sliding into the holder no matter what case you have! I then came up with the idea of butchering the RAM Mount Stubby Cup Holder Mount. I removed the 1" ball from the top of the Stubby and then I enlarged one of the existing holes on the ProClip/Brodit mount and secured the 1" ball to the ProClip/Brodit mount. Heres the final result! I am very happy with this solution. Its secure, the phone does not vibrate and its not obstructing anything. By using the RAM Mount short arm, I can position the phone at many different angles. I sometimes use Torque Pro app to monitor engine oil temps and intake temps, so I find it useful to bring the phone closer to me when using the app. With the larger X-Grip tablet holder, I can mount my iPad Mini or my NVIDIA Shield Tablet. There is some movement of the mount when using a tablet, but they are a lot heavier that a phone! RAM Mount sell the ball that I stole from the now useless Stubby separately, so you wouldn't have to buy the Stubby to get this part. It can be found HERE. Hope this helps someone with a large and heavy phone like a Nexus 6P!

Thanks for this writeup.
Quick question about the ProClip mount: besides the fact that it required you to remove the case, was the mount otherwise convenient? In other words, if it had fit perfectly with the case, would you have stuck with it? |

Wow, that mount is not quite ugly enough for me. The car's screen is already like a iPad just Hot Glued to the dash with it's 'add on' look (not as bad as the MB CLA LOL). I have been looking also but have not seen a phone holder that did not make me want to just leave the phone in the trunk! Hope it works out for you! By the way, your car is backwards.....LOL...

If you find anything that can do all that and looks more fitting for the M2 interior, then please do update this thread with your findings! I think you will find that my car is actually the right way round! Driving on the left is actually safer and makes much more sense from vehicle control side of things. But dont take my word for it, plenty of scientific evidence to support this.

I've been using a 3D printed insert for my cup holder for a few years. The connection needs to be seated perfectly, anything taller than iPhone X could be tight, this model only supports apple lightning cable. I lost a cup holder but I prefer this over any mount or peripheral on my dash.

Amazon has them if you need to ship outside of the US. There are also better photos on amazon: Kuda 3195 Leather Mount Black Compatible with BMW 1 / M1 & 2 / M2 (F20/21/F22) 2 (F23/F25/F87) (Since 2018) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079ZXW4SL..._knCpDbS599CG3

I gave this one a try because I was looking for something to hold my phone securely while on spirited drives to display the digital readout from Bimmerlink. It has a ring that expands the base to fit the cup holder very tightly and holds the phone very secure. I’m happy with it.

Most people prefer not to block a functioning vent or access to buttons. That seems crazier to me.

Here is the Kuda mount in my old F80. While not in the same position as in the M2, the design is actually very stealth with good quality materials that match the interior quite nicely without blocking vents or buttons: 20180506_1630 - Shift Knob - IMG_4930_100 by JMG, on Flickr IMG_2592_100 by JMG, on Flickr

The phones in the pictures will all fit nicely in the armrest (iPhone X here), but the oddments tray just in front of the cup holders is also handy, as is just dropping the phone into one of the cupholders. As is leaving the phone in your pocket.
In all cases, answering calls is just a button press away, while dialling is just a button press and voice instruction away. All this without replicating the phone screen on the dash display. Which also works well. So, in summary, not sure what this thread is actually about, but I'm happy to have someone explain it to me. |

Also, when on the track, I often have Harry's Laptimer running on my iphone which is paired with a GoPro. The iPhone will needs to be hard mounted like pictured to pass inspection and I need to see it for data readout like lap times, delta etc. You cannot just leave it in the cupholder or the tray. It's a safety issue. With the g-forces on the track, the phone will quickly become a projectile or worse yet fall into the footwell and under your brake pedal! Going 140mph into a corner and finding you don't have brakes is quite the puckering experience. I'm sure this is also a potential problem on the street as well. Also, what I like about the kuda mount paired with the proclipusa mount is the lightning cable is integrated. No need to fumble with the cable and plug it in. Just drop it into the cradle and your done.
