Early 2014: Porsche presented the Cayman GTS, and most said: "Wow ! At last, the real Cayman !"

February 2015: Porsche presented the Cayman GT4, and most said: "What ? Already ?"

I hope for an affordable CS and that it comes to the US. I've got two years left on my lease anyway so I can wait a bit.

I can imagine that some Porsche Cayman GTS owners have mixed "if only I would have known" emotions about the introduction of the Cayman GT4 less than a year after the introduction of the Cayman GTS:Base M2 versus hardcore M2: in the end it might be comparing apples with oranges.

If BMW M continues to toy with the GT6 Vision Concept as benchmark for the hardcore M2, we can guess that it will be a more Spartan (read: less weight and luxury), track-focused two-seater, virtually not suitable as daily driver and featuring an expensive price-tag (deep into M3/M4 territory or even beyond). Not particularly suitable for daily driving and possibly no preferred choice of the significant other. Quite a different world compared to the M2 base version.

Maybe it's a deliberate strategy to load (some may say "bloat") the base M2 in its stock form with goodies that are not really necessary for those tracking the car. As a matter of fact, by doing so the weight difference will be more significant: "With our hardcore M2 variant we managed to reduce weight by x kg/lbs compared to the base M2". And upon a closer look, the car might feature just the bare essentials for the track, with only few options available (some just a free of charge delete option).

For the record about the E92 M3 GTS: very limited production (± 150), street legal, orange body color only, M DCT only, no rear seats (roll bar + fire extinguisher), less weight for center console and door trim, titanium rear silencers, black 19-inch light 359M wheels, airco was optional, polycarbonate for the back window and rear side glass, no audio system, less sound insulation, CF seats with three-point seatbelts and six-point harnesses, etc. and a price-tag of approximately twice a regular E92 M3. Oh, and as BMW didn't want to go through the trouble of official certification: not made available for the US.

About the E46 M3 CSL and its "less is more" philosophy:
"In 2003, from June to December, BMW made 1385 CSL versions of the E46 M3. CSL stands for "Coupe, Sport, Leichtbau", hinting that BMW had designed a car even faster than the standard E46 M3.
Obviously, it is not easy to improve on an E46 M3, as it already has all the major BMW M features. Therefore, the CSL has small improvements, but lots of them:
1) CSL is lighter
2) CSL has more power
3) CSL has suspension and steering upgrades that improve handling
4) CSL has improved aerodynamics
5) CSL has better grip
All those small improvements together amount to quite a significant performance increase. At the Nürburgring, the E46 M3 has clocked a very impressive lap time of 8:22. The CSL has a time of 7:50. That is a night-and-day difference.
As part of the extensive weight saving program, some equipment was simply left out. There is no navigation, sunroof, fog lights or leather seats. In fact, the car could even be ordered without air-conditioning and a radio, both being quite heavy items to drag around a race-track. And where it really counts, some parts were replaced by much more expensive lightweight items, such as the wheels, front apron, roof, bootlid, rear window and front seats.
To further improve the performance, engine power was increased to 360hp, which is 17hp more than in the standard E46 M3. Suspension, steering and brakes were upgraded. Front splitters and a redesigned bootlid were included to reduce aerodynamic lift. And to perfect the masterpiece, semi-slick Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires were the choice.
BMW still wanted, however, to maintain the everyday usability of the car, so it continued to have some equipment that many sports cars don't, such as rear seats (that even fold for extra storage capacity), power windows and mirrors, and reading lights for 4 people!
Choosing the exterior color was made easy. Customers could decide between only two colors: Black Sapphire Metallic and Silbergrau Metallic. All CSLs have a grey interior (Stoff Amaretta Reflex Pur Anthrazit) with black roof lining and the same lightweight seats.
There were few choices of optional equipment. Air-conditioning, radio/CD, park distance control, xenon-lights and car alarm were the most important ones. Although they do add weight, most cars still have them.
Instead of the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires, a more conservative wheel and tire set-up was also available for those customers uncomfortable with the idea of semi-slicks.
The CSL bootlid does not have a button that would open it. I guess this saves some grams of weight. Still I have wished a thousand times the button was there. If you don't have the remote control key with you, there is no way to conveniently open the boot. You'll have to walk all the way to the cockpit to push a button there. How often do you need to open the boot while sitting in the car? The button would be much more useful at the bootlid itself. The bootlid does have the (heavy!) lock to manually open it with a key, but again you have to have the key in your hand. Have you seen Top Gear's review of the car? Jeremy Clarkson holds the remote behind his back and secretly presses the button as he opens the boot, making it look very easy. He is quite a magician! [...]
A sticker on the windshield reminds the driver that the car is on semi-slicks. Driver should be careful when driving in very wet conditions or when the temperature is below 7°C (45°F)."

Valid point.
  • base M2: luxurious daily driver oriented;
  • M2 CS: the harder edge featuring S55 fireworks tuned to ± 400hp;
  • M2 CSL: outright hardcore lightweight lightning featuring eDrive.

Only 15 M3 GTS's were sold in the UK. Ultra rare car.

The M3 CSL was 50% more expensive over a regular E46 M3. Apparently BMW struggled to sell the 422 that were brought into the UK with discounts of upto 25% 12 months later to shift the remainder of stock.

The following makes interesting reading though:

M3 CSL confirmed differences
- Engine block (supposedly picked from the least flawed cast) – The blocks have the same part numbers as M3, Z4, but the full short block is a different part number 11007833675
- Engine head (exhaust valve and intake/exhaust cams - longer duration, same lift) – intake cam shaft 11317835041 exhaust cam shaft 11317835043 Exhaust Valve 11347833676 (30,5/5,95mm) – the valve springs are exactly the same
- Intake plenum (carbon airbox as we like to call it) Air Collector 11617833496 filter 13727838625 The other half of the carbon box: 11617833497 and control unit 11617833498 all the other ducting 11617833646; 11617833645; 11617833648; 13717896774 intake grill 51117895883
- Extractors/Headers (same as post 2005 M3s and Z4) 11627833500; 11627833643
- Cat converter (200 cell) 18307833673
- X pipe, resonators (thinner material - slightly lighter) 18107833503
- Rear muffler - slightly lighter 18107833504
- Different ECU - 25% more capacity 12147837328; 12147834982
- Different SMG control unit program 23607837731
- Pseudo Alpha N engine management (delete of MAF, but still runs a MAP sensor, and air temp sensor 13621739510- debate as to whether this is just for idle control however) MAP sensor part number 13627833561
- Different traction control system with M track mode on steering wheel (much like the DCT mode in new E9X series)
-Different ABS control program
- Shorter steering ratio 14.5:1 (compared with 15.4:1 on M3) 32132282647 (same steering rack as the M3 CS)

Funny I came across this thread as I was doing some renderings about the future M2 GTS/CSL...

Here's my M2 CSL... Well, at least what I think it will look like, .

Subtle visible differences compared to the stock M2: You can see the differences on the animated gif

1-Wider front and rear tracks with wider front/rear wheel-arches, Bigger air intakes (air curtains).
2-carbon fibre roof.
3-Wider wheels all around on fully adjustable coilover suspension.
4-M4 GTS/ M2 MotoGP rear wing
5-M2 MotoGP carbon fibre front spoiler + M performance front and rear winglets.
6-CCB brakes from the M2 MotoGP.
7-Bolder colour palette with reference to BMW's past Motorsport icons

Non visible parts are:
1-CFRP hood and bootlid
2-Water-injected N55 engine + e-drive (?)
3-Part CFRP chassis (à la 7 series)?
4-Possible rear sear delete + roll cage

I'll work on a version with M mirrors in carbon fibre later on...

Oh man, this thread is getting exciting... After CAR mentioned the CS in their article, it seems there finally is something out there.

Way too early, but I wish there was a price leak sometime this year, lol! I would REALLY want such a car (safe to say, I'm not the only one).

Also, I like LBB, but seeing those colors makes me think, "Why you no offer Individual Program, BMW?" (stupid paint limited factory)
