BMW has indeed directed its products (including M) for the masses as of late but, CSL models have been nothing short of awesome to this point. I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt. Imagine a 3200-3300 lb F87 with all safety and 2020 crash test standards intact.

I stand corrected. I meant CSL as BMW has it slated to be a GTS replacement. A CSL of old would be bueno. 😁

I've never understood why the E46 M3 CSL with that garbage SMG transmission is so revered. It's the most overrated car in ///M history as far as I'm concerned.

As for the possibly upcoming M2 CSL, rear-seat delete kills a lot of the attraction of the M2 for me (great for track junkies, but not so much for those of us who are road-focused and use our ///Ms more broadly). And if it is DCT-only, that would further reduce my interest to zero.

I strongly disagree. M-GmbH stretched out the farthest so far with the E46 M3 CSL. So many parts unique to this model, just to shed weight. Performance was up there as well.
Most overrated has to be the E30 M3. Everyone who has ever actually driven one has to admit this. I own a S14 powered E30. It's fun, but far from beeing iconic.
The M2 CSL would only be another parts bin special.
You realize that a M2 CS would be a perfect match for you? Rear seats and 6MT and all?

Receiving that interior in 2020 will be a bit of a disappoint...
Hope the price is sane enough so i can get tempted to change my m2comp for it.

Best regards

I was starting to think this same thing. It's going to feel really basic. Would be nice if it at least came with latest idrive. Basic and modern is different than basic and outdated.

I don't use any of the added tech in my f-type, but I do notice the nav system feels like Atari.

I know how you feel; I had a new G series 330i recently with the digital Cockpit Live dash and it made my 2016 feel archaic..

I'm looking forward to the next gen M2 over the CS, just to future-proof my purchase and not feel the bug to upgrade, in order to keep up with the times..

However, if you live your life a quarter mile at a time, I could see where the CS, with its emphasis on scanty luxury options can be appealing.

Remember Porsche in the past using those "Becker" radios/head units. For crying out loud. Maybe "because racecar" ?

For good reason, no frills in a sports car is the right recipe.
Manual transmission, handbrake, simple M-gauges = timeless winning formula.

"Bigger changes will be found under the hood, as the M2’s 3.0 liter six-cylinder engine will reportedly be tuned to produce 450 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque sent to the rear wheels" copy and paste from carbuzz article

So a step DOWN in torque? sorry I don't want it any more

Is this true? The M2 Competition has about 406 torque.

Methinks they were a bit too buzzed when they wrote that.

Ya... probably a typo.

It's looking like they're giving the CS the same tune as the M3/4 ZCP

Wonder why M2 CS can't have the same tune as M4 CS. Product positioning again?

Likely yes.

However I've also heard that the 6MT is rated to a certain hp/tq number, so if it exceeds that the transmission manufacture may not warranty it.
