You saw a type R in so cal? Thought it was not released yet or it will even be although Honda said they will bring it finally to US?

I have a MW M4 if thats what you saw
Yea saw what looked to be a Civic type R, maybe it was a fake? But I was shocked as well. Now that I think back on it I really wish I would of taken some pictures

People who have been tracking in the last 25 years will know that Front Wheel Drive + short wheel base + light weight cars used to run some of the best times on a short tight track in their class. Until AWD cars like the EVOs and STis came along they were king.

Their turn in is amazingly fast and can be driven to the limit every single step because they are easier to control then RWD cars. Their weakness is after the apex when powering out of a corner because the front wheels are both turning and putting power onto the ground at the same time, traction becomes an issue.

This has been a fascinating discussion. But................

Do any of us REALLY cross-shop BMW Ms and Honda Civics?

And do I care one iota whether the Civic Type R with front wheel drive is close to my M3's lap time?

Of course not.

Kudos to Honda for making the Civic. But I can't imagine buying one. I've driven front wheel drive cars. They are no where near as fun a a good old fashioned rear wheel drive car with a good old fashioned manual transmission!

I'll keep my M3. Better reputation. Inline 6. Better looking. Inline 6. Better practicality (4 door). Inline 6. More torque, more grunt, more fun!

Just my humble 2 cents!

You shouldn't. Instead, you should be surprised M2 keep up A45's pace.

A45, despite of its understeer character, which is arguably boring, has incredible grip and demolishes a lot of things at track, including m235i. M235i doesn't have a very different chassis than M2.

Why not, the folks at Autocar have a Type R on long term test, and it looks like it is a very friendly DD car.

Audi RS3 v BMW M2 v Mercedes-AMG A45: Aussie Track Battle

The first 10 seconds was all I needed to pick a winner

Not sure why they got a manual M2 versus the DCT A45 and Rs3....the results are interesting... enjoy guys!

Thanks for the video! It proves that a well balanced RWD can still beat FWD biased AWD hot hatches! I bet it would have been a second faster with the dual clutch...

Close result, but awd cars have a real advantage with the standing start.
Focus RS is so cheap in interior, I don't see why we keep seeing comments of it next to premium cars.
Maybe a Cayman S would have been more interesting to be added in the matrix as a sport car benchmark 😊

It's an argument of performance / $, that's all they're truly getting at in comparisons like this.

The CTR is $15k (or more) cheaper than all of the other cars, the lowest on power, FWD, a 6-speed and is was still well within the race.

Again, the CTR isn't there to exude a sense of class, but performance capability at a lesser price point.

So don't worry, no badges were injured during this event.

From an internet search, the CLA45 is 10-12 seconds slower than the M2 around Nurburgring. 8:10 to 7:58.
