Do having a moonroof really depreciate that much on M cars? Hey, I love a little open space in my cabin haha. Guess I should push for an even larger discount if I'm interested in one with moonroof.

In 40 years the ones with moonroof could even be more desirable from a collector point of view since there aren't many out there. Enthusiasts usually look down on them because of less headroom for a helmet and more weight in the roof.

I don't plan on tracking mine, and it actually may be promoted to a family car in the future, so prefer the airiness of a moonroof

Short story, the car has held its value - even better than I thought it would (and I think someone from Toronto owes me a dinner). As noted, it probably increases the value. They are rare and those who want them, want them. I know I did in 2017 but the product planner for the BMW M2 in NA felt "that was not in the spirit of the car" - even though other markets (including Canada eh), got them. I LOVE when product planners tell us what we want.

Lucky for the rest of us, you are not the product planner for the M2...

I personally hate moon/sunroofs on any performance oriented car. I feel like it adds weight and I hate the way they look. You couldnt pay me to have a sunroof on an M3/M4 when there is a carbon roof availible!

That is why I value the choice of amenities. Then, both parties are happy. I've been debating whether to order my with a moonroof and I think I have decided, yes. Would only be using my car on spirited drives and grocery getting. Want some light and fresh air from the top when doing both!

And the look argument is weak as well on a dark car (no arguments on a white car). More headroom for a helmet? That is a valid argument. But in case you are curious, about half the days of the year are cloudy here in Chicago, and man, getting some sunlight in the car certainly is refreshing.

But heck, I'll answer The ride of the OG M2 broke me. Loved that car and would still possibly have it if it had been dialed in better. The adjustable suspension in my M3 makes a world of difference. Having seating for 5 also helped.

I see where you're going with this and I think the same could be asked for me.
First, the M2 and M2C are not stripped out or lightweight. In fact, the M2C is the same weight as the M4. Second, at least for me, the appeal of the M2C is it's shorter wheelbase. This is where the fun characteristics really play out between the M2 and M4. Therefore, sure the M4 is more luxurious, but doesn't mean it's night and day between the M2. In fact, I would want something that is more agile and yet still contain modern comfort amenities. Another example would be the various 911s you can purchase. A base Carerra or Carerra S are great handling sports cars. But owners often load them up with comfort options and there is nothing wrong with that...you don't really ask them why not just buy a Panamera, instead. Also I've seen Porsche GT cars speced with all leather interiors that are more luxurious than M cars.

But by and large Cayman/Boxster are bought by people who can’t afford 911s. And yeah...the M2C is another animal altogether |

Regarding your other point, everything’s relative. “Stripped down” simply means limited features and options. |

I feel like they're completely different cars and for different purposes. Mid-engine vs. rear-engine have completely different driving characteristics. However, I will give you this, I did consider picking up a 718 GT4 because I can't afford a GT3. But now things change because I need something more "practical" for that cost 😞

Me, personally, I've had several Porsches, and the last two were a 991.1 (911) that was in for service for a week, and I got a 981 (Boxster) as a loaner. It was such a better car - better transmission (both were manuals) and better handling, that later I sold the 911 and bought a Boxster with no regrets.

I was shocked at how well the M2 holds it's value compared to others in the line. I had a 16 435xi GC that stickered for $10K more that the M2 new but when I traded it in I had to put $10K with it to get the M2 (paid $38,500 for the M2 with 32K miles, exec, CPO). I only had the 435 GC for 5 months and HATED the wallow, weight, and totally numb steering feel. I figured with my 4 series depreciating faster than the M I should bite the bullet and trade sooner than later. I got lucky finding the right color and equipment (AW 6MT) relatively close by at a fair price.
