M2 CS vs used M4 CS vs M4 GTS
Forgive me if this has been discussed already but search here and google does not show history of the comparison.
I have ordered my M2 CS; MB, 6MT, gold but in playing around on auto trader I found that you can now purchase a very very lightly used M4 CS or even M4 GTS for about $5,000 less than the M2 CS. This took me back a little bit and raised this question for me. I think after researching more and consideration that the M2 CS is still the best choice for me. Manual trans, little lighter and more compact, more functional "regular car" use than the GTS. Wanted to see what you guys think of these options and the comparison now that all can be had for $79-85k. |

Want a manual tranny, then M2 CS is the only option
DCT lovers, I would go M4 GTS BMW shot themselves in the foot by not offering manual on the GTS and the M3/M4 CS. If they did then the used value would be very different. The GTS would be highly sought after...a collector’s grade M |

Agreed on all points. I wanted a manual, that's why I ordered an M2.

My dealer offered me an M2cs with carbon brakes and DCT for 91 or a brand new inventory M4cs with carbon/dct for 95.
I ordered the M2cs because it's basically a lighter weight M4cs and I already have an M5c and the M4cs has already proven to be a sales dud. Plus, all the pics and reviews I see and read praise the M2/M2c/M2cs so why not join the fun team? |

I didn't go M3CS used because of the transmission, the size of the car, and the reputation for it not being quite as fun and dynamic as the M2. I also considered the M4 GTS, but the lack of back seats was an issue for me, and the maintenance costs around the CCB's was another consideration along with again the size and the reputation of the F8X platforms.
In the end I felt that the M2 CS was delivering as much value at the same price as either of those two options, while additionally having the combination of "needs" I really wanted that they didn't, and hence felt it was worth it without question.

I didn't want a "fun" car as large as an M3CS or M4CS. I was interested in a capable 2+2, and the C/CS is more of a hooligan than a 991/992 plus its more practical than the 991/992 for my situation. The bigger the car the less inclined I am to want the M designation. The only other BMW that has my interest now is the I4.

Before I bought my 1M, my track cars had been a 99 civic SI, 2005 Subaru STI, then a 2005 Mazda RX8. I test drove an e92 M3, loved the sound of the engine, but felt like it was a heavy pig. I put a deposit on the 1M at that time. I knew that it was the only M car I could even consider owning.
For me, the M2CS is the natural successor to my 1M which has become more of a track only car. I think it's life progression will be fairly similar, three season daily driver and weekend fun car for the first 5 to 6 years, and then possibly becoming the successor to my 1M for track days. I ordered it with the DCT. If I was selling the 1M, it would've been a harder decision and I probably would've gone with the manual, but right now I'm looking forward to having the best of both worlds. By the time this is my track car, I will be well into my 50s and ready to retire my left foot. Of course that assumes I won't have decided on something else by then. If size of the car isn't as critical for you, the used cars you mention would be a bargain. There is no right or wrong answer here!

Couldn't agree more. I typically won't buy new. Demo/loaner or try to get a few years old. This fortunately/unfortunately ticked too many boxes to.

If you plan to take them to track, M4 GTS all day. You can swap the CCB rotor to steel for cheaper maintenance. The only drawback is the lack of manual, and with DCT being a such fantastic transmission, I wouldn't consider this to be much of a dealbreaker as well.

M4 GTS is the closest to ///M philosophy.
Feeling is much more raw, sporty than others. Gives you that stupid grin face when driving it sharp.

My current M2 Comp is much more practical for that and it's a pretty good track car as well. Even with the Comp, I don't turn all the "nannies" off when I track for enjoyment. With the CS, I will soon find out. |

I struggle to see the M4GTS being the closest to ///M philosophy. I am under the impression that their philosophy has been to create edgy daily drivers that retain their utilitarian usefulness at the expense of comfort. The M4GTS seems more in line with Porsche philosophy of creating a racing version of their main lineup.
