Summer tires are always noted by their manufacturers in regards to their operating temperature.

A personal experience, don't worry I didn't forget about that.

A tractor-trailer ran a red light in front (perpendicular) of me when I was on my MPSS's... even with all The safety features of my M235 (back in 2014) it did not allow me to stop in time. I was about 2 feet too long in stopping. It was an early cold snap in September... unusual for the area I was in.

Had I had my winter tires on I would've stopped in plenty of time.

They are called SUMMER tires for a reason.
Ahhhh, this makes a lot more sense. No tire is going to save you when you're driving too aggressively for the conditions and equipment. I would have blamed the tire too.

Why?
Because 285-35 or 295-35 would be way too big, that's why!! That's why I said unless you go down to 30 sidewall to compensate for the width, if not, it will look ridiculous like a 4x4, but then again, you particularly might like it.

Ahh, this thread has been enlightening.

I hadn't thought about most of the points people brought up about wider tire size...

A full pound heavier is ridiculous

Thanks for the info!

I foresee a lot of Cup2 tires being sold. 🤔

Unless you really can't have another set of wheels and tires and need max performance on track I don't think it's worth it to run them.

They are way less comfortable than MP4S, the Cup2 as a very stiff construction. Every rock rock or pebble sticks to then, they are noisier, they hate cold, there not very good in the rain and they absolutely hate being at the wrong pressure.

In my case the wear I got was very uneven also. It's really a track tire than can be driven to and from the track. BMW really puts them on these cars to boost performance specs but 99% of owners will be much better served with the MP4S and for the rest, a second set of wheels with a track tire like NT01, A052, RE71, RS4 etc. make a lot more sens.

You can totally track your car on MP4S and have a blast, it's such a great tire. One could argue that the M2CS suspension will get tuned to take advantage of the Cup2, I doubt it but it remains to be seen.
Exactly. I use my street Michelin’s (PSS currently but will replace with PS4S) for, well, street driving, and as my wet setup on the track. They do these duties amazingly well.

And I have dedicated track tires for the track. Fit 4 wheels and tires in the back seat, everyone is happy. BTW there are much better track tires than the Cup2’s. Cups are expensive and wear quickly, you are much better served by something like an RE71R.

Bottom line - run, don’t walk away from the Cup2 option.

Excellent feedback 👍 I'm going to do what I can to drive away on a set of PSS4s.

The Cup2 make terrible street tires. You can't get them hot enough to take advantage of the extra grip. For 99% of street driving, the MP4S will give better grip.

Good video on M4cs and Pilot Sports.
I agree with it. The car was tuned for these tyres. Having said I'm lucky with the climate side of things.

1. Take delivery with cup2s for warmer months and buy a set of PS4S for the winter. There are a couple of months where the temp will occasionally drop below 32F. 40s and wet will happen.

2. Just get a set of PS4S and use 100% of the time. I'm not buying a second set of wheels.

3. Run the cup2s and accept being careful in cold and/or wet.

As is, I have to be careful in the cold and wet. Mainly wet with my Pirelli p-zeros. Any standing water causes issues. Luckily I can change driving modes for a 50/50 bias front and rear to help. No such option with CS. I'm leaning towards Option 2.
I can guarantee you that these tyres are a bitch at cold temps.
My car was delivered in october and in december I decided not to put my winters on as I was not driving a lot. During one of the rides close at home I completely lost traction at the front axle (understeer) at 20kmh in a 90degr turn and damaged two rims (luckily repairable). It was damp. Good surface. Clean driving.

The strange thing is that on the autobahn at 180kmh (or faster) in Germany you will easily manage to bring heat in your tyres even when you're balls are freezing off, 30degrees Celcius was easily reached at minus 5degrees Celcius outside temp.

That piece of paper is a nice CYA, I would hang it at the toilet to wipe your arse with. They did the same with the M Performance exhaust for the M2,3 and 4. Since then none sold anymore and believe me, a lot of them exhausts were sold to lazy M buyers like me, receiving your car at the dealer with the goodies mounted

What were they signing about the mp exhaust?

That it is an exhaust not allowed on public roads, for offroad or track use only, liability waiver, a lot of yadieyadieyadieya.

On the street, PS4S performs better 99% of the time...

Get the Cup 2 only if one tracks the car often and willing to sacrifice street performance

Smart tires....what will they think of next? This technology deserves a little research.

If the electronics are built into the CS, and you don't have to use your phone, then my decision is made

Why is that? If your CS does track >50% then you should get the Cup 2 regardless of CONNECT or not.

If you only do 20% track then why bother with it as the tyre compounds take a long time to get close to operating temperature on the street. You will be driving with tyres slipping fairly often.

Deflate the tires for prolonged sitting? I thought you were supposed to over inflate to prevent flat spots?

Tyre choice in for the CS HK was obvious for me : it may not have rained for a month, but kick it in the guts in 2nd coming around a bend and there's usually a happy rivulet streaming across the apex, giggling at your rear grip. HK doesn't have a race track either.

On a side note, we switched from SS to 4S on our 1M and found the grip amazing, but also a bit more tricky to get the rear slippery on MDM in the dry. Now it needs everything unlocked, and guards sent home for any diagonal work - and except on a one way road, at the crack of dawn I won't be that nuts.

So for us on the CS there won't be any Cups, and I assumed the CS would therefore be shod in SSs - but apparently HK gets M4S. Totally weird after reading though BP about SS being part of the set menu.

Wow, I'm surprised by the comments here.

I've had PSS on my F80 and on my Supra (both cars came with it stock). I HATE the PSS, they're soft, their level of dry grip isn't very good, they feel a bit clumsy on turn in, prone to punctures, etc.

The PS4S is superior to the PSS (back to back on my F80 it was night and day). I'm not sure why manufacturers are still using the PSS over the PS4S today, perhaps it's to cut costs, but the PSS is an ANCIENT tire that should be discontinued. Don't get me wrong, the PSS was a great tire in 2012, but tires have evolved immensely since then.

That being said, I've now owned three cars that came with the Cup 2 standard. The Cup 2 does wear out quite a quickly, has poor wet traction, but they have amazing grip in the dry and turn in is fantastic. Based on personal experience on and off the track, I am going Cup 2 over garbage PSS all day.
