There's a lot of sarcasm and insults in this thread. If you don't think a mid-cycle change from an older, defunct N55 to modern B58 with significantly higher tuning headroom is somehow an insignificant change, you're being straight up ignorant. We aren't talking S50->S52 here. We are talking a massive step change in architecture, cooling, tuning potential, power and torque, etc. No more need for overboost, etc. The fact that we get a motor change ONE model year after an LCI is both surprising and bad for depreciation. If you made an educated guess, you'd say the N55 would go to end of the base F87 as this noise about the emissions certification isn't as big a deal as some make it out to be (EJ257 anyone?)
I get where you are coming from with the depreciation issue. All the info I have read on the forum indicates that it will be the S55 engine in the M2 CS.

The first BMW model to get an S version of the B58 is supposed to be the X3M.The engine is called the S58 and will have 450-460 hp in the X3M.The X3M is being released in 2019.

Today I hit stages 3 and 4. Anger, how can you do this to me BMW? Bargaining, maybe it's not so bad? maybe I should get another car? (hi Porsche dealership and the 6 quotes sitting in my inbox) . Then straight into depression and reflection.

Then I started to remind myself of why I wanted the car in the first place. Worked through it.

Struggling with the same thing? I'll save you the grief. It's not that big of a deal. Already own one? No need to drive the thing into the river. Value will even out in the end. Take the car you want now. Enjoy the car you have now.

On Friday I will accept delivery of my Alpine White 18 LCI M2 and won't give it a second thought. I'm getting my fast fun car with just enough street power for under $60k. What many have called the best M car currently available. CS and S55 and whatever the future may hold be damned.
In around 12 months from now ... Gatte will be posting about his M2 CS.. but that M2 CSL on the horizon. ...

It's either that.. or BMW quits making the M2 in 2018 as abruptly as they ended the 1M.. but this time ending completely with a final blast of M2 CS.... wow. What will happen. Dunno. But I'm sure happy I've got my 1M.

Yeah. And you'll be crying about the lack of a manual transmission in the M2 CSL and regretting about your decision about waiting and hoping for it. I will absolutely be rubbing my car in your face and telling you how your plan was doomed from the beginning.

All that's if I don't go and wait for the CSL myself.

Yeah I feel you also. I felt the same way for a couple days and actually put the car up for sale for a bit. But the N55 does sound better, the premium will be not justifiable but the visceral happiness will be the same, and something next to look forward to for the next generation of M2s or even the Z4 :0). Like every other product, there are always upgrades rolling out. I am excited to see the comparisons!

This is the best scenario for everyone. A more expensive CS ends the line up and the whole M2 run is a limited one.

One thing I will say N55 vs S55, the N55 feels like it gets more winded in the high RPMs than the S55 but the N55 responds much quicker down low.

True. The S55 really pulls in the mid range whereas the N55 struggles. My MY2016 Civic Type R outperforms my M2 between 40 and 70mph. Providing the road is dry and perfectly flat of course. Any damp or bumps and the Civic has zero grip, despite all the hype.

Something happens after 5000 rpm where it just seems a bit strained.

I always figured it's a cooling issue and not enough cold dense air getting to that turbo

It's more that the turbo is undersized and that there isn't a second one to compensate. Cooling issues only happen on repeated pulls at high temperatures.

There's more to it than just shoehorning the engine in the bay though. Are the transmission bolt patterns the same / swappable? If so, that helps a lot, but I don't know if that's the case. Remember they'd presumably want to put DCT with it instead of the normal ZF auto.

There's also the issue of the differential... presumably there is some amount of wizardry that is happening in a computer for that thing to work correctly, and I'm guessing that it would need to be re-tuned for a different motor.

Obviously none of these are insurmountable problems, but the fact that nobody has seen any test mules does make it seem less likely that an M2 will get a B58.
