5 yr Tire and Wheel Warranty.
Hey guys, my dealer is offering me a 5 yr tire and wheel warranty. Do you guys do this? I'm assuming it's a standard BMW offer. Don't know what to think about it.
Thanks!

I had a separate wheel warranty through my BMW dealer on my 2008 M3 (BBS wheels) and it cover everything, including replacement, on any type of wheel I had on the car. At the time it was worth it to me because I was able to purchase it at dealer cost which it translated to only a few hundred dollars. It also was transferable to a new owner which made it attractive during resale. You'll need to decide if it is worth to you. Figure out the cost of the wheel (worst case scenario, is replacement) and also if this is your DD, the type of roads in your area, etc... Another factor to consider is how well are your existing wheels now. I know this is going to be a new car and you will take care of it, however, there are a few things you cannot control over time.

The finance weenie at the dealership where I got my car offered me a similar warranty. I don't recall the cost exactly, but certainly >$2k. He claimed it was an official BMW warranty but I don't believe him as a sentence later he said the car has run-flat tires. I didn't care anyway, a wheel repair is $150 or less (I did all four on my G37S for resale) and I only need to replace tires outside of the manufacturer's warranty for wear, so.....meh.

I wouldn't do it. I live in wash dc and dd my 235. Not one issue in a year. I think the 2series is easy on the wheels. Now my brother in Boston has a 5 series and he went through 2 rims first year. He told me his car is heavy and brutal on rims in Boston. Now one thing in my favor is my square winter set up...great tires f the winter on cheap ass rims. That set up is my tire warranty tbh.

Those warranties are a tremendous profit center for the finance guy which is why they push them hard. In reality its a warranty on the life of your tires (about 15k max) and wheels. Like any warranty it is all about risk tolerance. I never take any of them and have never regretted it. I have a friend who buys a warranty for everything and never uses it but that is his business.

The stock wheels are forged, right? Another reason to decline.
I avoid all of the warranties, but I did get an extended 7yr/100k mile warranty on my Subaru for $300. I kept saying no and he kept lowering his price. EDIT: Just looked up OEM M3/4 wheel prices. $855 each. Hot damn. |

These warranties are almost always through a 3rd party service. I've had the warranty on every previous BMW in the last 10 years. Honestly, I've recouped more than the cost of the warranty on claims.
HOWEVER, most of those claims were from nails in the tire, unable to patch run flats you have to replace the tire. 3 of the claims were dented wheels (replaced) and one blowout. All run flats. With non-RFT tires, there's diminishing returns. Also, to note, there's coverage with and without cosmetic. Essentially the non-cosmetic coverage will only repair/replace the wheel if it's unable to hold air. Roads in Philly are horrendous, I've already negotiated down the cosmetic coverage and will likely pick it up but want to get wheel price first. |

I actually curb my rims a lot...maybe it's because I'm getting old but my dealership offer it to me - 6 years for for 1079 and it includes aftermarket rims. So after what happened to my EVO, this is fine.

For the Infinity I just picked up I did the tire and wheel insurance and I usually never buy this stuff. But a friend of mine went through 3 wheels last winter and everything was covered. It was $599 and even covers the wheel from curb rash so I went with it. No deductible and is only good at an Infinity dealer. I would get this for my M2 at the right price and if underwritten by the same company. Forged wheel get damaged just like any other wheel and the M3/4's I see all have curb rash or damage from potholes where the tire has left a permanent mark on the lip of the wheel let alone all the curb rash I see on them.

I didn't get any of the add on 3rd party warranties. Since the car doesn't have run flats and no spare are you just supposed to call BMW roadside assistance if you get a flat? This is my first BMW and first new car in 13 years so I'm a noob. They didn't explain much at all at the dealer. I guess the point is, whatever you do in this situation it won't involve you changing your own tire.
Edit: never mind...I just realized there's a compressor and some sealant in the trunk. Last edited by Em-too; 04-18-2016 at 10:48 PM.. Reason: Had an epiphany! |

I got the 5 year warranty. It is a BMW sponsored plan. All the literature is branded BMW.
$50 deductible. Cosmetic wheel repair is included Replacement tire and wheels for the normal road hazard stuff. Looks to be underwritten by Safe-Guard Products International Safe-Guard Warranty Corp. Negotiated from $1800 to $1117. I thought it might be worth it. I can cancel anytime and get the prorated difference back. It is also transferrable if I sell the car.

Nope. I did it once 11 years ago on my 330. Cost less than 500 and never used it. Now it's much more and I've passed on it.

You can get just your tires covered by a local shop. I did CJs by me and it was $100 total no deductible.

While I love these black 19", they are a complete pain to match if you curb them due to the finish. I've read a few shops even refusing to touch these wheels.
