Talk me out of this idea I had today….

OK guys, talk me down from a ledge . . . sorry if this gets long . . .

First, my 1M is a beast on the track with all of the mods I have done to it, but it isn't a great road cruiser anymore. Consumables are crazy expensive, and everytime I work on it I find new little things I will need to address. Its a pretty valuable car to be risking on track.

Second, I spent half a day tracking my son's RX8 last year when I ran out of tires at a two day event (see above regarding consumables, LOL). Not only was it nice to have a back-up car to use, but I had as much if not more fun in that car than I have in the 1M. For me, its not the speed on the straights, and the RX-8 corners and brakes better than the 1M even with stock alignment and all season rubber.

Third, I just picked up an old Prius for my son to take to college. We were going to sell the RX-8, but when I drove it home from the meet-up to buy the Prius, I realized just how much I LOVE that car. I don't want to sell it.

Fourth, I am daily driving my M2CS and feel like I am just putting miles on it for nothing. It is an amazing road car, but it is so fast that I can't possibly take advantage of it on the street. I don't want to track it for many reasons, including it's cost and what would probably be even more expensive consumables than the 1M. It is too small for family road trips to the mountains where it would absolutely shine, but we don't fit in it easily with two teenage boys and it hasn't gone over a pass yet much time my chagrin. While I love the DCT, I figured my wife would drive this car, but the seats don't fit her well and she doesn't like the way the DCT works . . . it does take a little getting used to, and she just doesn't like the car enough for to spend time in it.

Fifth, I kinda miss having my X5 which had a more luxurious interior, fit everyone, and was great for roadtrips. I don't want to go back to that, and had been considering replacing it at the end of its least with a 5 or 7 series….that was before my CS allocation came along.

Sixth, and here is the dilemma: I stopped by my dealer today and they have an unsold new Alpina B8 on the showroom floor. The guy who ordered backed out. It would tick all the boxes as a family road trip car, would be a nice daily driver for me (I have a truck for winter) and my wife could use it also. The interior is as awesome as my X5. Bowers and Wilkins FTW! It would probably be an even swap if I traded both the CS and the 1M for it. I would then turn the RX8 into a low cost track monster. Wilwood brakes, Ohlins coilovers and some proper rubber would make it an absolute late braking corner carver, which is really the reason I go to the track.

Bad idea?

Trading in a 1M and a CS for a B8? I can't stand behind that logic. I've put 13k miles on my CS, and I'm not saving it for anyone. I'm also tracking the crap outta it so don't hold back and enjoy it for yourself, not for the next owner...

I probably wouldn't, keep the Rx8 though.

If you're not driving it or otherwise enjoying it and there are other cars you'd prefer then move it on. Someone else will fall in love with it and sounds like you've got an amazing few cars to move to.

Trading two classics for a practical? I understand falling in love with the B8, but the math isn't going to work in a year or 3. I also understand loving the RX8. I fell in love with my son's Miata.

I don't know what to tell you, but keep the RX-8. During normal times new cars depreciate 15-30% as you drive them off the lot. That B8 won't hold it's value like your other two classics.

I personally would trade in the cs, but not for an alpina b8, would trade it for a ct5 v blackwing. You get good space for road trips, car looks great, engine sounds amazing and you can redeem yourself for getting the cs in a dct and get one with a manual

Problem is you wont be able to find a ct5 v for msrp but I dunno seems like the perfect family/daily. The alpina b8 would be boring to me specially coming from a cs

I agree with others on the financial side. You'll get good money for the 1M and CS, but the B8 will depreciate a lot more than those 2 assuming the market swings back to normal. Also, while I've never been in a B8, I can't imagine it's a great family car if it's anything like the 6 series gran coupe. The rear seats are very tight for adults or even older children.

I'd go M5 CS, maybe even M5C or X5M if practicality is what your looking for. Or you could trade either M car for an X5 M50.

That said, cars don't need to be practical and the B8 is rare and a really cool car.

I was surprised by the rear space. I am 6" tall. With the front seat positioned for me, there was plenty of room for me in the rear. Headroom was close due to the gran-coupe roof line, but I could be comfortable back there for hours.

I think the majority of us would be lying if we said we never thought we'd let go of our beloved cars for something different. That being said, here are my thoughts. I've had/have both the 1M and CS and at times regret letting go of the former.
1. Keep the RX8 and follow through with the plans, it's already in the stable.
2. If you really want something else , release either the 1M or M2CS. If the 1M, return it to stock for better value.
3. With 2 legends you will regret selling both for sure , 1 less so.
4. The new muse will do its job for awhile until the lust-er wears and we come to our senses.
5. The other options mentioned are worth checking out . Although sweet, the M5CS and CTS-V will be more fun and hold value better. If you are considering cutting 2 legends loose, replacement with another is mandatory .
6. At the end , life is short , do what will make you happy (for the moment, the car affliction will make you rinse and repeat this cycle in +/- 2 years)
Best of luck, and of course let us know what you do before you trigger pull..

What are the specs on your 1M?

If you're gonna let it go, maybe it should go to another enthusiast instead of a dealer?

Cars like these are rare these days . I would tho , trade both , for a used latest model RS4 avant and a manual M2 CS . You will have both luxury and fun . You wont miss or regret something .

I believe you will regret trading those 2 , for a car that will probably worth 1/3 of its value in 5 years. Either , its your own decision , there is no right or wrong.

Having slept in it, I am stepping back from the brink. I do think at some point I am going to grow up and stop buying small firm nimble cars and move into the luxurious comfortable land yacht stage of life, but I really don't want to be there yet.

Reminds me of my friend that wanted me to drive his Raptor. I drove it, but for the life of me I just felt like I was going to clip every parked car.

I think the biggest I've gotten to this point was the X3M. I just haven't found the comfort level to want to daily a yacht...

thank goodness. Alpina B8 stands for bait. Your dealer is trying to reel you in and you would've had sellers remorse.

In your case, do you really need 2 track cars though?

If answer = yes ("1M + RX8"):
sell M2cs
else
message "buy back M2cs after selling"
# sellers remorse
print (Do nothing)

If answer = no
sell 1M
else
buy X5m Competition ("happy wife")
print "today is mother's day"
keep m2cs ("magazine choice award")
track rx8 ("late brake = dive bomb")

2 cars for one car. Nah. Don’t give up the 1M AND the M2CS. Either or, imo.

B8 would be sick, but not sweet enough to justify both when you could just put up one and still turn it into a really nice family car.

Slum it and grab a LIGHTLY used S63 car and put a Carbahn tune on it. It’ll haul ass, do the job, and may help ya keep an extra M car around.

I went out to dinner with a friend of mine and my wife and I rode in the rear seats of his B8. Plenty of room, even for a long road trip.

This is funny. I pulled up to the golf club in my modern 911 about 20 years ago, and an old guy asked me "what are you doing? Those cars are for kids!"

Growing up has nothing to do with it. Clearly he had never driven a 911. I'm older than that guy now.

Personally, I don't think I'll ever lose the passion you speak of. Comfortable land yachts are great for long road trips, but boring as hell. 911's were originally built as touring cars and the old ones did it as well back then as the new ones do it today. They are wonderful cars to travel in.

I've been hooked on cars for over 50 years. I'm sure I'll never see the day where I don't own a sporty car, or grow out of having fun with them.

A few responses to the just Stolt of all the post above:
I own too many vehicles right now.

Odyssey (wife's car, family hauler)
2022 Wrangler Rubicon 4xe hybrid with factory lift and 35 inch tires (also wife's car, for fun)
GMC 2500 (tow rig, can't do without that)
M2CS (mine)
1M (my track car and occasional weekend fun toy)
Mazda RX8
Has been the sun's daily but not going to college with him)
Prius (going to college with my son)

The RX8 would do a great job of satisfying my need for a 6MT fun car around town when I want to play, very fun at legal speeds, and very competent for the aspects of driving on the track that I enjoy most. If I use the RX8 that way, neither the 1M or the M2CS leave me with a commuter that I can enjoy driving the family around in, especially when we head to the mountains. We usually end up taking either the truck, the minivan or the wrangler.

The answer is clearly a medium sized shop nearby split with a pal to store and support your growing collection of cool stuff.

CJ, sounds like you have lost that lovin' feeling for the 1 M and in my opinion you should revert it back to stock and sell it to another righteous brother enthusiast that will give it as good a home as you have.

In my world the M2CS would be dedicated for the track, and the 1 M for precision canyon and backroads carving. But if you find that the RX8 is equal to or better than the current application you use the 1 M for, then rather than have redundant vehicles it's better to move on and let the next guy in the queue have the 1 M goosepimple experience.

It's perfectly natural and understandable as I'm sure we've all had that the Thrill is Gone experience with virtually all of our vehicles at some point, so most cars follow this rule during our lifetime.

If you opt to part with the 1 M I would retain the CS, so you at least have one special vehicle that has a bonus of being highly collectible the likes of which arguably we will ever see again.

This will still leave you considerably short for the Alpina (personally I would go for the M5 Cs), but at least it will cull your stable.
