Winter wheels/tires rubbing

Recently got a set of 19" Vossen HF5's to match with a set of 265/245 Alpine P4S' and I've had the delightful, free bonus of the fronts rubbing against the fender liner whenever I maneuver anywhere near lock. It's bringing out the perfectionist in me and I'm losing my mind. Anyone have suggestions on solutions? I'm already near the point of just selling the Vossens and putting different wheels on, but that now brings about the issue of not knowing if newwheels will cause rubbing as well. I know the 763ms don't rub but that's a lot of money . Anyone have 19" winter wheels running the same tire sizes that don't rub? Would love to know your experiences.

I use the same winter tires on 19 inch Apex EC7. Rubs at full lock. I think it’s the tire profile being tall. I’d try different tires instead if it bothers you.

I have no rubbing with PA4 245/265 and 437M wheels. There was a rev to the wheel well liner at some point I think, some people needed a heat gun and to push the plastic back but I did not on my 2021 M2C. If you search you can find it I think. I don't know if the wheel will change it. In theory the wheel should have nothing to do with it if the size and offsets are the same, but some people did report rubbing with stock wheels.

I ran 255/275 35 Michelin Alpine pa4/5 last year on the CS. It has the most subtle touch on the fender at full lock and honestly it only happened when parking as I didn't turn the wheel that far while normally driving in the winter anyways. When I took the wheels off there was no mark left on the fenders. I'm now running that winter set on my E92 now as the CS is garaged. It does the same there, ever so slight rub at parking speeds on full lock. No marks on the liner so far. You can see the clearance on the 2 cars here. This set was originally on my f82 that I sold and it had no rub there for what it's worth and that was lowered on Bilsteins

I'm surprised you rub on 245. That would've been perfect in my case but my wheels are 9.5/10.5. that's why I have 275 on the back. I normally ran 255 squared in the winter on OEM 513m that came on the M4 and these wheels were my summer. I then replaced the 513m for the 666m for a really good deal then the VMR wheels became winters. Now they're gonna be full time wheels on the m3, will likely get them refinished in the summer

I’ve realized the 40 profile (more so if you have spacers) can rub. Learned this the hard way when I got some alpine 5’s which the closest size I could get for the F87 were 245/40/19 and boy those were a mistake for the front. Ended up having to drop down to a 235/35/19 of the PA4 instead of 5’s. Try to stay in the 35 range if you can ideally, I do have a slight rub at all most full lock though that’s due to the 10 mill spacers I have on the front now and I’m lowered a bit on Öhlins.

That's interesting! My rubbing is also only when parking but it's just been grinding my gears. Funnily enough I had no rubbing while I ran the stock 19" 763M's but the 19" Vossen HR5's rub for some reason.

Did you have winter tires on the 763?

Moving down to 235's may just be the solution, but I could swear they never rubbed when I ran the 19" 763M's as winters, but for some reason they're rubbing with the 19" Vossen HR5's. It barely snows here but we get a tonne of rain so I was hoping to maintain the slightly wider wheels, but I'll explore 235s when replacement time rolls around. Thanks.

I did! For the two winter I just bounced both summer and winter tires around on the same set of Stock 763M's and I never noticed any rubbing. Finally got the Vossens to rock as dedicated winters and all of a sudden it's rub city.

Oh interesting it didn't rub on 763. Overall it's the winter tires they're just chunky. 255/35 ps4s or cup2s people run all the time on our cars in the front with no issue

Bless you...I consider it a gift.

To reiterate, I personally wouldn't let a slight rub on lock get you into narrower tires.

I think I'll message Apex and see if they can confirm one of their sets don't rub. Otherwise maybe do the same with BMW. Rubbing is hurting my soul

It’s the tire not the wheel almost certainly given it affects some with stock setup. Search in the other sections and you should find the heat gun trick that you can try. Apex might tell you that they don’t rub but I bet they test with PS4S or some other summer tire.

Also in the camp of would not want to drop to a 235 as the would be a bit too narrow for me personally. As suggested the heat gunning of the inner left fender line should get you a bit of space if you choose to do so. The right side you can't do much as there's some cooling bits behind that fender line.

My stock 763Ms don't rub so I've decided to just move those to winter duty and get a set of gold 763Ms for summers

This makes sense! The shop I go to heat gunned and got the left side some clearance but not the right side. Very good to know, thanks.

You have had PA4 on the 763M? Again, what I am saying is that several people have had PA4 rub on stock wheels. It's not the wheels. Maybe it's worse on your Vossen's but be prepared for the possibility it will rub on 763M also.

My stock 788s with PA4s rub up front but minor nuisance vs their capabilities in the cold.

I call them my "low temp cup 2s"...

I have! No rubbing on them. I got a ridiculously good deal on another set of 763Ms so I'm gonna use the ones that I have that I know don't rub on the PA4's as winters and throw the new gold ones on with summer tires. All's well that ends well.
