I've always waned a tire trailer but also wanted minimal stuff in the car if I had one.

To help carry more, I bought 2 48" X 20" boxes from Tractor Supply. I now know the same boxes, "Better Built", can be bought through WalMart to save some cash. I put one box in the front and one i the rear with the autox tires in between. I left room for potentially larger tires down the road.

I used a 2x4 platform to raise the tires enough [o fit as desired, With the two boxes all tools, clothes etc have room, and are out of the car and elements. There's about a foot of so more room at the end of the trailer for a bike.

Weights 700 to 800 lbs with tongue weight at about 80 lbs. Very easy pull.

I bought the trailer from Trailersplus which has dealerships all over the country. The salesman that helped me pulled it up from his database. I didn't believe the US spec'ed cars were rated at all, apparently they are.

I see, yeah I'm pretty skeptical about what salesmen have to say since they'll say anything to make a sale. I've checked every BMW website from Canada, USA, Germany etc and no mention on any towing capacities. I think it's more likely that 3500lbs rating might be what the hitch can handle and not what the m2 can tow.

I understand the skepticism as I could not find any documentation either. But, a national distributor is not going to assume the liability just to sell a bottom rung $500 trailer... The GVWR for my car is 4,430 lbs, the GAWR Rear is 2,380 lbs. I could put the TRAILER itself (cut up), all the contents and my chubby butt INSIDE the car and still be under the GVWR.

Trailersplus didn't sell me the hitch, ball mount or ball. All of which (including the trailer) are independently rated well below 3,500 lbs. There is likely some calculation with the weight ratings to determine towing capacity. If you're considering doing this but are concerned, call the stealthhitch folks. They sell a product specific to the M2. They wouldn't do it if the car couldn't handle it because lawsuits.

Maybe, but most people claim things to be platform specific but are just carry overs and compatible, not specific. You'd have to test the frame as well not just do calculations. I think the hitch was made for bike racks, which bmw also has for the 2 series, not for towing small trailers. I would love to get this on my car as well, since I'm tired of towing cars to the track because of the crazy tight parking lots and sometimes there's nowhere to park when you have a trailer as well.

The issue i'm worried about is if the m2's bumper brace can handle the weight of towing for long periods of time. I would logically thing so because that's how the m2 would be towed itself onto a tow truck with the rear tow hook. But it probably wasn't meant for sustained use.

The hitch mounts to a sturdy piece of the bumper assembly. For what I'm doing, max trailer weight of 1,000 lb with max tongue weight of a little more than 100 lbs, I have no concerns.

Pasted from stealthhitch:

The vehicle capacities with the BMW M2 trailer hitch are:
3,500 pounds - gross trailer weight (GTW)
250 pounds - tongue weight (TW)

https://stealthhitches.com/products/...h-2016-present

They must be getting the ratings from somewhere. If you call to ask, let know what they say.

Yeah I'll give em a shout, I highly suspect they base it off of engine selection. For example for anyone of the n55's with a tow rating they'll base it off of the lowest rated one. Unless they spent alot of time testing it (highly doubt it unless they have an m2 in shop, and a customer car could be damaged doing so) it is likely an estimation based on a blend of other n55 cars and what the m2 can carry as a gross vehicle weight.

Good to see the trailer options ppl implemented, however, I don't have the space in the garage and am thus stuck fitting 4 tires, floor jack and 2 jack stands, 2 x 5 gal jugs of gas and my tools and clothes into 2 waterproof 20 gal plastic bins. And I still have space for a (fit) passenger.

Reviving an old thread but I love this idea and am moving forward with my own trailer. Ordered my curt hitch yesterday. Still deciding on the trailer but I might do the 4x6 like boony1968 . I might plan a multi-day track tour so I may want to take 2 sets of track rubber with me so I'm good for the duration of the trip.

The only downside to this is I don't have storage space for the trailer at my house so I'll have to store it at a nearby facility but that shouldn't be a big deal.

Pretty excited. I always used to drive/track on the same rubber. I remember getting home and inspecting my tires before the next even to find the inside of my rears were corded. I could have easily been stranded 7hrs from home (on some of my trips). It'll be nice to have a separate set with me.

Check out Leroy Engineering's Trailers. They have 2 models at different price points. Solidly built. You won't even notice you are pulling anything. Without a doubt the best dedicated track upgrade i've made.
