What are the options for accessing the BMW car's network?

What are the options for accessing the BMW car's network for diagnostics and/or sensor display?

Q1: When coding the car do we still need a cable and computer? Meaning instead is it possible to use an ODBII WiFi adapter instead of a cable? Or is a physical connection better when coding incase you loose the network while flashing?

Q2o you need to use the official BMW ODBII WiFi adapter to use the BMW M Performance Drive Analyzer app? Or can use a generic ODBII WiFi adapter like those mentioned here?

Q3: Do you need a ODBII WiFi dongle or can you access the same information via the BMW Connect interface? Is that WiFi too?

Q4: Is BMW ConnectedDrive MirrorLink or some other standard or BMW proprietiery?

Q5: Where can I learn more about using the BMW APIs for writing programs or app that can read from the BMW sensors, e.g. oil pressure, temp, etc.?
