“What oil do I use” seems to bring out a lot of opinions. This is what I would do, located in the US. Other countries may use different specs for a variety of reasons (emissions systems, fuel chemistry, environment, engine calibration, ect.) I run BMW Genuine 0w-30 SP in both my cars. Of course using FCP Euro lifetime warranty. X5 gets 5k oil change interval. First UOA looks great. I’m gonna track my M2, so I’ll keep the OCI to 3k and check the condition of the oil via UOA after that.
If you’re on street driving, BMW oil or LL-01FE rated is fine. Be sure to check the API spec for the latest formulations. If you’re modded AND track use, I’d step up to a Motul 300V 5w-30 and see how that fairs. Stronger antiwear additive package that may not be great for your emissions system (not important if you’re catless) and lacks stout antioxidants for long drain (replaced by antiwear additives lol). Motul is on Porsche forums a lot and have recommended 3k intervals with 300V regardless of usage. Something to remember, thicker oil will reduce efficiency and increase heat. Hotter oil breaks down additives faster, and the extra heat on the engine accelerates wear to seals and puts extra stress (thermal cycling) on the metals. For example I could run 15w-50 in my S2k and it would get to 280F within 4 laps. Where a 0w-40 would maintain oil pressure per Honda spec and keep temps around 260F.
