Unhappy G87 M2 fuel tank capacity: approx. 52 liter again (same as G42 218i)

EDIT: Oct 2022 update:

Wished that the G87 M2 would have featured the approx. 63 liter (approx. 16.64 US gal / 13.86 UK gal) fuel tank capacity of the E46 M3.

Developing a new generation model of the M2 offered BMW the chance to fit a bigger fuel tank inside this all-new high performance car (eventually the G80 M3 / G82 M4 fuel tank).

Unfortunately, BMW failed to address this: disappointed to find out that it's approx. 52 liter again (approx. 13.74 US gal / 11.44 UK gal).

Hard to believe, but the G42 218i has definitely the same fuel tank capacity. Needless to remind that the G87 M2 is approx. three times as powerful as the G42 218i (460ps versus 156ps), consumes more fuel (see here [G87 M2 specs PDF] and here [G42 218i specs PDF]) and definitely serves high performance driving purposes.

The fact that also the F87 M2/M2C/M2CS featured an approx. 52 liter fuel tank, is no excuse, as exactly the same criticism was expressed by quite a number of drivers of those cars. And the G87 M2 weighs dozens of kg heavier. 'Range' doesn't only matter for electric vehicles.

Almost certainly the G87 M2 has sufficient space for a bigger fuel tank. Bothered about the DIN weight figure going up a couple of kilos (cf. 90% of the fuel tank criterion) ? Impact of the added weight on the global fuel consumption figures ? Come on BMW, you can do better. For example Porsche offers a bigger fuel tank as option for several of its high performance cars: for practicality reasons it's a no-brainer to tick that box on the options list.

For sure BMW should be capable to fit a bigger fuel tank in the future G87 M2 Competition or G87 M2 LCI. This ain't no merely aesthetic matter such as the side mirrors design of the original F87 M2 - no, this is a practical aspect of a high performance car: extending 'Freude am Fahren' for G87 M2 drivers during high performance drives.

Unfortunately, that won't happen. If we consider the G42 2er as indicative, expect yet another approx. 52 liter (approx. 13.74 US gallons) fuel tank capacity (same as F87 M2).
Seriously. What were they thinking? Save weight? Guess what, add less fuel if weight is a concern. Fortunately I came from a car with fairly equal range. It's only when I'm in my wife's x5 that I have capacity envy

lol. Tank is already hilariously undersized with the S55. A similar engine making even more power? Sigh.

I remember when the Lancer Evo came out and people were like "AWESOME car, but c'mon you're making 300 hp now, a 14.5 gallon tank is WAY too small."

I've had to drive my MIL's 2.5L Altima with CVT for a few days. I filled the tank with 15 gallons and that nets 539 miles of range according to the computer.

Would gladly give up half that range for (easily) double the performance and fun from the M2.

That being said, another gallon or two of capacity wouldn't hurt...

Snap! Had an Altima CVT rental car a couple years ago and drove from Revelstoke BC to SeaTac (700kms) on a single tank.
I was totally surprised by the range you could get out of a midsize petrol engine sedan.

Couldn't make Portland to the border last month

One up time!

I had a Ducati Hypermotard with a 3.3 gal tank. Thats an 80-120 mile range depending on how you ride. A lot of fuel stops on long trips.

Did a road trip with a friend on a brand new rental Altima 2.5S. He picked the car up in Boston, MA with 15 miles on the odometer. I flew to meet him in Kalispell, MT then we made our way up North to Calgary, Banff, Jasper, Vancouver, Seattle, then Portland where I flew back out (he continued the trip solo down to Utah before calling it quits and driving back to Boston).

I'm sure there were multiple times but I truly only recall filling the thing up once on that entire trip.

The new M2 will be more of a porker so more fuel ⛽️ isn't going to help IMO

Just been reading about the new G series M240i xDrive. It's 220kg (484lb) heavier than the outgoing F series M240i, in addition to being longer and wider. This may be a result of being based on the new 3-series chassis. Weight reduction does not seem to be the idea behind the small fuel tank.

The other question is why would anyone need the xDrive unless it's an admission by the manufacturer that the engine output is now too much for the chassis.

Discuss...

I personally don't desire xDrive on the M2

That said, the M240i xDrive will be a very great car for those who actually do want it

Surely what they want is a performance SUV? Its big, heavy, and 4WD.

How much range do you think the G87 will get? M3 gets 18-23 so I think this will get 300 miles on a tank if you aren't flooring it, which you will be.

If the same capacity I may hit 180 miles if I'm lucky assuming engine efficiency improvements? I barely make it past 170 now...but I smile all day

245 miles is really low considering

Battery efficiency is fine for its size, it's the weight of the chassis that is hurting it.. Battery pack is about 200 lbs more than Tesla but full car weight is almost 1000 lbs more. This is the downside of using a shared platform between ev/gas.

Agreed

Hopefully BMWi brings another 100% built from ground up EV like the iX, and i3… This market is definitely ripe for it

Anyway back to the M2 tank size… The last thing the M2 needs is more weight and extra fuel adds unnecessary weight
