What gas are you putting in?
I usually put in Petro 94 in my car but I'm wondering what you guys have been putting in your M2. Is the shell v power supposed to be just as good?
I've had bad experiences with the top grade esso. I've tried husky 94 in my F30 before but I feel like the Petro/Sunoco 94 is the best. |

All we get here in NB is 91, so you have to make do...I prefer Shell V Power, best I can get around here, but in a pinch I'll fuel up at the Esso or Irving if I absolutely have to.

Esso 93 at selected stations
In a recent road trip, I was forced to put Esso 91 due to stations not having 93 No noticeable drop in performance (I wasn't pushing it hard though) |

I've been going with Shell V-Power 91 to avoid ethanol but I'll probably go with Petro 94 for track days.

Shell V-Power whenever feasible. But I go on lots of road trips so have used Ultramar, Petro Can, Mobil and others in the US, including the occasional no name gas stations. As long as it's 91 octane or higher I'm happy, and try to avoid ethanol if possible. This is the same approach I used on my previous N55 135i, and I drove it to 208,000 km with no issues, including track use. So don't sweat it if you can't find 94 octane.

It does in Ontario.Sunoco purchased Petro Canada back in 2009 and since then all of there gas is the same as Sunoco. All of the gas they sell in Ontario has ethanol. My E46 M3 always performed better with Shell V power, which doesn't have ethanol in Ontario. That is what I still use in my M2.

Shell V-Power 91 all the way.
If yours tuned, then probably wanna go higher octane but if yours is stock engine with stock turbo and intake.. 91 ethanol free Shell V-Power will be the best selection. |

However, therer are few known factors that ethanol does and could affect engine of vehicles. 1. As ethanol is more volatile than octane it dries out the rubber (or soft plastic) components in fuel line and supply system resulting in cracks and gaps. More volatile characteristic also connects with higher freezing point which could result in condensation when temperature changed from low to high. (eg. entering garage from cold weather outside) 2. Ethanol is more corrosive in contact with some metal like zinc/ aluminum alloys and giving negative effect on injection in general in long term. 3. Also known to give more inefficent gas mileage. (I believe this was actually stated from New York Times before. Although it should not be a huge concern ppl driving vehicles like M2... LoL) |

I usually run Shell 91 if I'm filling up in the lower mainland. Air miles are nice but I also consistently saw better results from my Cobb data logs (on my STI) with Shell.

All Canadian 94 does. Do not use ethanol in your BMW. 91 is fine. Do not use additives.

FWIW, I just had this discussion with the head tech at Performance BMW. His opinion was that a good quality no ethanol 91 like Shell was better than the ethanol-containing 94s. He also said that Petro Can 94 didn't have real ethanol and was artificially boosted, so you don't even get the added power benefits. I read that somewhere else on the forums, but can't corroborate.
