Not sure if serious or not. For many artists today (certainly not limited to just Beyoncé), the process of making a hit is HIGHLY formulaic and manufactured. Which is contrasted to the popular music made decades ago that was simply bursting with raw, natural talent.

A fascinating listen on this is the Freakonomics podcast called "The Song of the Summer". It dives into the song manufacturing process and follows one of Rihanna's songs from start to finish as she attempts to make a summertime hit.

Beyonce does have talent, lots of it. I also believe she is indeed an artist, she has written great songs. The issue lies not in her content but in todays era and what is quantified as music and performing.

Freddie Mercury was a musical genius of self merit in every metric, Beyonce is not a musical genius in my opinion but a great singer, artist and performer who has excelled in todays fast food music world.

Is she equal to a Thom Yorke, Sade, Prince in musical creativity and internal talent, No!
But can she sell out an arena and perform, sing and entertain, yes, can she create musical magic of her own intellect without a support staff of an NFL team, doubtful.
And as hard to accept I consider Kanye West a musical genius as well, unfortunately he lacks humility and character.

The above example can be be seen as a math problem....one person to create an eternally accepted song across generations vs a staff of eight for a song most people haven't heard.

Totally different eras, totally different consumers. Back then, it was all about musical experimentation (not asimilar to drug experimentation that was prevalent back then as well). Nowadays, it's about squeezing as much profit from a hit as quickly as possible before listeners turn their attention elsewhere, and it requires a team to do just that.

As an aside, put Bohemian Rhapsody against Beethoven's 9th Symphony (from 150 years prior), and Freddie would get crushed.

Oh, I get the 'joke' I just think it's stupid. I don't care for Beyonce myself, but I do believe she has talent. What, because Freddy Mercury has a different talent set and sings songs you like more, doesn't make him 'better' It's different strokes for different folks.

I'll agree. Being a canvas through which other people's "art" can be delivered is a talent. Just not a particularly artistic talent.
