Am I crazy to trade my M2C?

I test drove a Tesla Model 3 and S. I found the S to be a more planted and a smoother ride, but the 3 felt like a fast Honda Civic. I was not impressed coming from an M2C.

Then I drove the i4 M50i and was blown away with how good it felt. Reminded me a bit of the E90 solid feel. In fact when I got back to my M2C I felt like the car was not as solid and stable like the i4. Even the steering felt weird in my M2C. Now I am in the process of talking to a dealership here in San Diego to get my hands on the 2025 i4.

Do you guys think I am that crazy to trade a M2C for an i4? Did anyone here do the same? M2C is regarded as a great car overall, but to me the i4 felt even better. Therefore I am here to check my sanity!

Also I didn't test drive the regular i4 40i or whatever its called. Not sure if its worth to pay the premium for M50i but let me know what you guys think.

For 2025, will there be a M60i variant as well?

Thanks in advace for your inputs.

I wouldn’t trade my M2C for one but instead bought a 2024 i4 xDrive40 to go along with my M2C a few months back. It’s my wife’s daily driver and she loves it. It is a rocket ship. Car and Driver has the 0-60 down to 4.4 sec in it so not terribly far off of the M2 pace. The M50 is a bit quicker but you’ll give up range for the extra speed capability. Ours is optioned with all the M goodies.

Thanks! Is there something about the M2C that you like over the i4?
I thought the steering was superior and it felt close to the M2C in terms of the way it turned in.

I suppose there's a certain amount of refinement we all aim for. If that is what you're after over the M2C, go for it, but I liked that "chatter" and playfulness, that it is on the cusp of being relative but also a dinosaur in the future with it's tech or lack thereof with the older iDrive etc etc.

Yeah I think you’re crazy. I’ve test driven a few i4 variants and each time I come away thinking it’s a smooth comfortable drive with absolutely numb steering. The steering is so numb that it’s made me question whether BMW has completely lost the plot with regards to EPS. I don’t think the M2C has great steering feel either but as soon as I got back in my car from the i4, it was like rediscovering the wheel (literally).

The i4 has to be solid because it weighs a ton and in order to get *any* handling performance out of it, it has to be robust. The M2C is more of an old school sports car, it doesn’t have a lot of refinement especially in the interior, so if that is important to a buyer, the newer BMWs do have appeal (G87 in that category).

A lot of people are enamored by the “gee whiz” factor of electric cars straight line speed. I know I would get bored with it - I need more.

You’re not crazy, it’s just not a typical comparison!

I don't believe anyone here is qualified to answer that.

Have you seen a professional for a proper assessment?

I'd go that route before pulling the trigger...

F87 is a future classic in any flavour. It’s a ruckus and a riot. The same can not be said of the i4, it is an appliance. Bet you the dealer you’re trading the M2C into is excited to have an F87 back on the lot and they’ll turn it around quick.
But as they say, there’s an ass for every seat, and vehicle usage cases vary from person to person.
TLDR; I would never do that trade.

Very crazy, but everybodys situation is different. And this is a biased forum. Maybe you can have both?

Depends on the situation.

People tastes change over time, but the fun of the M2c is hard to match. If you want more refined, lots of options out there.

DD with kids, maybe not crazy.
DD without kids - Potentially crazy.
Weekend car (with or without kids) - Yes, confirmed crazy.

Yes, you are most likely bonkers. I won't argue with that

It's time to be bluntly honest with yourself about who you are. Nothing wrong with wanting a smooth, quiet, quick in a straight line, no gas car.

Especially if you can only have one.

Taste change. I'm starting to lean more towards a GT car for a DD, but I will keep the M2.

you on the M2 forum.

The only car that is worthy a trade for the m2 is a GT3RS. Nothing else and you must be out of your mind

Yeah for sure 👍

That’s why I’m here to check my sanity.
Thanks for making me keep my M2C now.

I am not going to sell it for an EV.

i think what you've discovered is there is no perfect car. An i4 will never be as thrilling to drive as an M2 on the limit. And an M2 will never be torquey, smooth off the line, or calm/quiet as an i4.

and like someone else mentioned you have to be honest with yourself about your own driving. the i4 m50 is a very quick car and brakes well, and due to the extra 1500 pounds of weight its going to feel more solid. But its not going to stand up to abuse on a backroad or trackday like a m2c can.

I was just kidding though.

It depends on what you want.

Unless you want it because you going to track it or because you like the way it looks, there might be cars auto there that work better for your life style, ev or not.

From seeing videos of the Hyundai Ioniq N, if there was an EV id consider right now would be that one. I have driven a i4 m50 briefly and was fun but was also kinda boring at the same time

I see them as very complimentary cars. I like the idea of an EV daily driver (if you have a charger at home), but a BEV can never replace an ICE as a weekend/fun car.

A few months ago, I took my M4 GTS up to the Blue Ridge Parkway, and for fun, my friend brought his Porsche Taycan Turbo (keep in mind, he also has a Cayman S and Ferrari F430 for fun). While the Taycan was incredibly fast out of the corners, you can absolutely feel the weight of the car, not to mention it just had 0 emotion to it. "Fun" driving is just not where this car shines, and if there was a company that could do it, I would have figured it was Porsche.

Sanity prevails!

Just a suggestion…since you’ve already had thoughts of trading in the M2 and as a member of your online therapy team I highly recommend you send me you car title to hold in case these deviant thoughts return…

It’s always tempting to grab a new thing as it initially can be very exciting. However, the newness tends to wear off quick. Especially when you will be comparing it back to an all around great ride. For a real life example, just last week a friend called me after selling their favorite manual tranny convertible right as the good weather arrived in the Midwest. Guess what? After trying to buy it back from the buyer without success they are on a nationwide hunt to buy the same car, same color, same transmission.

Enjoy the ride!
