Unhappy New BMW M2 CS crashed at the Nürburgring Nordschleife

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Earlier today a forum member going by the nickname "Sylar" on a Belgian BMW fans forum, posted the Nürburgring Nordschleife webcam picture shown below which he had noticed.

The blue car on the tow truck (Lenz Abschleppdienst Adenau) is the new BMW M2 CS - Misano Blue Metallic - gold colored 763M wheels - red calipers.

I heard through the grapevine that this M2 CS effectively crashed this morning (Sunday July 5, 2020): upon exiting 'Fuchsröhre' ('Foxhole' - a fast downhill section of 'The Ring') the driver lost control over the new car, hit the guardrails and came to a halt at 'Adenauer Forst'. Subsequently the car was towed away. No information about the scope of the damage (a source merely mentioned "one M2 CS down"), the driver's condition (very likely OK) and whether it was a privately owned vehicle.

Unfortunately, an early M2 CS casualty claimed by 'The Green Hell' (aka "becoming part of the Bongard Club" or "becoming part of the Lenz Legion", referencing tow truck companies operating on 'The Ring').

This Porsche (entering the 'Fox Hole' @ 01:12) passes the low point bump (downhill-uphill point towards the 'Adenauer Forst' section) at 330 km/h @ 01:21:

Toto Wolff (currently Formula 1 team leader of Mercedes-AMG) crashing a Porsche 997 GT3 RSR at 268 km/h upon exiting the 'Fox Hole' (April 15, 2009) (entering the 'Fox Hole' at 02:22). He fainted after getting out of the car and was hospitalized with several injuries:

Again... short body high torque... no experience with this type before and this easily happens.

So this wasn't a BMW car? That section of track must be very misleading, or perception from the driver's seat is that you are coming in too hot so the natural reaction is to jump on the brakes instead of trusting the car to stick. I've watched enough videos, I believe it's this section, where it looks like they should have just stick to the line and would have been fine. Or they truly come in too hot and should try to just point it straight, get off the brake and hope they can drive it through the grass back on track.

Maybe it's not too late to get back in the queue for a new one. Hope they had track insurance. Or everyone else's car just became more rare.

The elevation change in Fox Hole is enough that your ears can pop. Love that part of the Ring.

On April 15, 2009, Toto Wolff (currently Formula 1 team leader of Mercedes-AMG) set a Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record in its class (07:03.28) in a Porsche 997 GT3 RSR. In following laps that day, he crashed at 268 km/h upon exiting the 'Fuchsröhre' section ('Fox Hole'). Porsche spoke about an exploded right tire, but only released on-board images of the moment of impact (unlike the moments preceding the crash, showing also the road view).

The 'Fuchsröhre' section in the crash video: after passing the bridge at 02:22 (fast downhill section) (note: although it looks as if Toto Wolff walked away from the crash unharmed, he fainted shortly after getting out of the car and was brought to hospital with quite some injuries - adrenalin allowed him to get out of the car):

Fox Hole has been one of the most deceptive sections where you WOT thru all the elevation changes and to a very high speed, which eventually leads to a very aggressive brake into a much tighter left-hand corner than you're able to see, actually a chicane which requires taking full advantage of the kerb on the left. Can't do it perfect without many lap practice.

"Fox Hole" sounds like a route that's strictly for experts, not freshmen; I guess the driver was a little too overconfidence and took that plunge...

For the origin of the Nürburgring Nordschleife sections: see here:
"6 km - Fuchsröhre
Construction work on the Nordschleife came to a temporary halt here. A flushed fox holed up in a drain pipe. The construction workers spontaneously gave this section of the track its current name."

Spot on, I experienced this last weekend.

I don't see any damage. Perhaps it just ran out of gas? I saw that a few times last weekend as well. Those orange trucks load bingo fuel cars on the back, and take them to the ED station just outside. I was waiting for 10 min to get gas while one was getting offloaded for fuel.

Per SeanWRT comment, I assumed the damage was on the right side bc of the tight, semi-blind left hand turn at the exit of Fox Hole.

Might have put the right front tire into the guard rail enough to damage the suspension and couldn’t drive it back.

Artemis said “guardrails”, tho, and it’s hard to see in the low res pic if the ripple on the left side of the car is damage or pic artifact.

Either way, hope the car and person get fixed and back on track soon!

Fox Hole is a tough section, but also super rewarding. I like to go 8/10 through there. It’s kinda scary at 10/10.

1:46 to 2:52 ish in the video. Schwedenkreuz into Fox Hole. Sorry for long video. Don’t want to re edit and re upload
