Accident Help Please - Got rear-ended

Long time lurker and first post.

My 2018 M2 was rear-ended twice last week. A Ford SUV rear ended me on the freeway and a white Dodge Van struck the Ford, which caused them to hit me again.

This is my first accident in a BMW so I could use your help estimating (guessing damage $) and what to look for from a frame/unibody standpoint.

Both right rims are scratched up from the guardrail and there are two small wrinkles in the right rear 1/4 panel and a dent on the passenger door. The front right corner of the bumper is also scratched up.

Behind the right rear bumper corner, the sheet metal/frame/unibody is pretty crumpled.

Any help or advise is greatly appreciated. Either way, getting a 2020 M2 from this - love the car.

I think getting a 2020 is a great idea. I never keep a car after frame damage.

I've had the entire front bumper replaced/painted by the dealer's BMW Car Repair & Collision Center due to a very low speed tap. It was quite expensive, but covered by insurance except for my deductible. I also had them check out the wheels and alignment. They even included the ceramic protection reapplication, although I paid the difference to have the entire car re-protected. Shouldn't you have the collision checked out to determine if there is frame damage and let them know what your options are?

Could use this as an oppurtunity to upgrade to a comp or CS

FWIW, I never keep cars that have more than paint damage, like bent metal. I think getting a slightly used LCI or a new competition is a better idea, and leave the rest to your old car's next owner.

Based on the parts list from an OEM supplier, I see about $10K in parts alone assuming the entire exhaust is replaced (looks like it will need it) and two new rims among everything else. I want it totaled but am resigned to a lengthy repair. Will absolutely trade it in and use the DV to offset the cost. My attorney is estimating about $15K in DV based on current value and potential trade value. Def want a new 2020 Comp in Orange and a manual this time.

Sorry this happened to you - I would do the same in your shoes (i.e., hoping it's totaled but resigned to lengthy fix before trading and getting/using DV). Hope it works out to your satisfaction.

I have no plans on replacing my M2, but I'm curious, what is the current wait time for a new M2 Competition? Back in April 2016, only one of the four BMW dealers in Central Pennsylvania even had a demonstrator to test drive. I waited 5 months before BMW built it, in which time it had turned to a 2017 model.

Doesn't really look that bad to me. As far as the body, it doesn't even look like the quarter panel was touched. So beyond the trunk lid and rear bumper cover, what else is damaged? I see the taillight, rear diffuser, exhaust system is bent, but the real question is how much is damaged under the bumper cover. My guess is that it's not really that badly damaged. Most definitely not a total loss or even close to a total loss.

The corner of the unibody/frame is bent pretty well under the right corner of the bumper cover. The entire exhaust is twisted up to the left and the center pipe is under the differential. Total might be a stretch until they pull the back apart. I found M2s with salvage titles (totaled) on auction sites with similar and less damage. I don't know so wanted your opinions.

I strongly suggest only allowing a BMW Collision Center deal with this. They are required by BMW to restore the car to factory specs. I was t-boned in my e90, the insurance company said it was 8k of damage wanted to do a half ass job through their "preferred" shop. BMW ended up doing 22k worth of work. I kept the car because it was perfectly repaired and drove great. In fact drove it another 200k before I sold it.

Definitely use a BMW Collision Repair Center. Do not fool around with regular dealer body shops or some other "best place around". A bmw CRS will repair the car to exacting standards. Also, this looks like about a $20k hit. Not really all that bad. 5 weeks to complete restoration is my guess. Make sure to get a rental loaner from the fellow who hit your car. You will appreciate your car all the more when it is as good as new.

Wait time? There's zero wait time. Every dealer in NJ I've been to has at least 1 or 2 of them on the lot.

Rear body panel and floor could be crushed as well as rear rail damage, quarter could be buckled, could be anywhere from 15-30k depending on which shop it ends at.

Had a rear passenger collision and also damaged the front bumper when coming to a stop.

BMW said they could repair it, but couldn't guarantee it to proper spec on the track due to frame damage that would need repair.

Damage estimated around $40,000. BMW recommended write off due to the frame twisting.... so it was totaled. Damage looked similar to yours just less bumper more quarter panel and wheel.

I'm waiting to see the CS and new M3 before deciding on my next purchase. Was really sad to let her go.

Long story short due to accident related representation - I'm back in a 2018 M2 now. That car is no longer in my possession.

approx 4k if the chassis is fine, that’s my guess! u’re very very luck that the side panel’s are not hurt, just changing trunk and bumper under bumper parts..and cosmetics.. additional 6k if you add the exhaust which the car deserves, supersprint turbo back;-)

Ended up being $20,000 minus my deductible. Add another $10K for the depreciation due to the significant accident damage at trade-in. Shop did the absolute best they could and it looked great but not the same vehicle. Waiting for counsel to "make it right"...
