Is the 295 tyre 30 or 35 profile?

What size wheels? Stock suspension? Stock alignment?

I'm confused... I thought we didn't want to go shorter sidewall in the back... I'm assuming this is a 245/35/19 295/30/19 setup

I’m not sure the exact setup they’re discussing, but you’re correct that you do not want a shorter tire or shorter sidewall in the rear compared to the front.

That said, it’s the actual measurement that’s important, not the series (30, 35, etc).

Reporting back in after season opener at Summit Point this past weekend.

ZM2 I think this is OBE because you already got some wheels...but for anyone reading that is shopping or interested...

I have:

APEX FL-5 Front: 18x9.5" ET28 - 265/645-18 Pirelli Slick
APEX FL-5 Rear: 18x10.5" ET40 - 285/645-18 Pirelli Slick

These are the newer versions Apex came out with in February with the M2 in mind. No spacers required. Very pleased with combination. No rubbing, no issues, lots of grip. I ran most of the weekend on stock wheels and Contis as the weather was in the 30's and 40's and even some snow...but once it warmed up Sunday I was able to try them out. I recommend them to anyone in the market.

Nice, thanks for the feedback. You’ll have to go post in the Track Times thread just how fast those slicks are. Altho, that first season outing in March is always more about checking off-season setup changes and shaking off the dust, or snow in this case!

After reading this thread, I'm still none the wiser as to max width on stock wheels. I see plenty of owners have gone 255/35 + 275/35 with no problem. I wonder if it's possible to go 265/35 + 285/35 on the 9" and 10" BMW wheels?

This thread is about max rubber on the track. OEM wheels won’t get you that.

However, I run 265/285 as my street set and some guys do 295/30 on the rear OEM rims. The tire section of the forum has several threads regarding tire fitments on the OEM wheels.

Looks good with 245/295 - why didn't you go wider at the front ?

How's the balance with only wider 295 rears ?

What suspension mods have done to yr LBB car ?

In my garage with 4 wheels and tires of each brand stacked up next to each other that .5" x 4 = 2 inches taller for one stack. That was what set me off on finding out if it wasn't an optical illusion.

But wait there is more. It's hard to see in 2-D photos but since you have the tires , look at the sidewall of the Maxxis. It's sort of rounded and the tread contact patch doesn't really make it to the edge.

In comparison , the Bridgestone tire shoulder is squared off making it so that tread goes ALL the way to the edge of the tire. This is part of why I took the photos of them laying down next to each other.

The width of tread that actually makes contact with the ground on the Maxxis is actually less due to the shape of the tire... indeed making the section width much greater than the tread.

At any rate .. whether it's .5" wider or .75" wider contact patch per corner ... the clear thing is that you are getting a LOT more rubber to the ground with the Bridgestone R1 than the Maxxis. That's hella important when trying to avoid wheelspin at the rear and also with trying to avoid having the tire roll over on the front when cornering.

The Maxxis have been hard for me to kill but when I do I will go to Bridgestone RE on one set for Autocross and driving to track and the BFG R1 as my track set.
I have been through more than 6 different tire set ups on track in my M2....a local shop let's me do some testing! I prefer the 18 square, using TR 18/9.5 wheels. The Maxxis RC1 275/35 run "fat"... need a bigger spacer, more likely to rub on compression and not as big a footprint as others. The Hoosier R7 in 275 has a better contact patch and grip but may still rub slightly without a 12mm spacer.
The RE71 in 265 square is a great all around tire, wet or dry, but several seconds slower. My overal favorite is the BFG G-Force R1 in 265/35, it fits without issues ( still using a 5mm spacer in front), has a contact patch equal to some 275s, wears well and gives me great lap times.

Great feedback. What do you feel are the pros/cons between the R7 and R1?

That's a close call...because of varying tracks and temps my observations are purely subjective. I felt the R7 was slightly faster when fresh but fell off a lot quicker than R1. The R1 withstood many more heat cycles. The real preference for the R1 is that it comes in 265/35 and fits like a glove without rubbing. The R7 is only available in 275/35 and I had to do more with spacers and ride height to avoid rubbing with high compression.

These measurements I know works well on the fronts:
265/30 19 ET23
https://www.willtheyfit.com/index.ph...=10&offset2=23

And I guess this would work at the rear? It's just a wider tyre on the OEM size wheel.
295/30 19 ET40
https://www.willtheyfit.com/index.ph...=10&offset2=40

My idea is to get four (or actually six) 19x10 ET40 wheels and run 17mm spacers up front. This would give me great flexibility for square or staggered rubbers in different combinations.

Is ET40 optimal for 295 on 10"? Or should it be just a little bit further out? Not considering optics here, just track use.

I think you’ll rub the fender with a 295/30 on an OEM wheel, if your car is lowered.

It's just slightly lowered (Öhlins are conservative on lowering and I both agree and follow their recommendations)

And max camber with original rear end is around 1.9

Anyone measured or phtotographed how much space there is between 10" OEM rim and suspension in the rear?

Even with the camber I think it’ll rub, but I don’t know for sure. Look at the 295/30 pics in the Tire section. Looks like it sticks out too far on ET40.

I’m going ET45 in the rear with the 295/30. Will have some feedback on inner and outer clearance on Friday.

In a pinch (longer story), I tried out 305/660/18's on the rear at VIR Tuesday and they seemed fine in the afternoon I put them to use. I didn't see any evidence of rubbing or other issues.

So, my test fit is looking pretty perfect, will post pics later. Details below.

Suspension:
Dinan coilovers
Front- 13mm drop, -2.75 camber
Rear- 20mm drop, -2.0 camber

Wheels:
VMR V710FF
Front- 19x9.5 ET33
Rear- 19x10.5 ET45

Tires:
Pirelli Trofeo R
Front- 265/30/19
Rear- 295/30/19

Fit:
Front- Great. Clears the suspension without a spacer, and plenty of room to the fender.
Rear- Close on the inner and outer clearances. For outer clearance, we're going to trim the fender/bumper tab just to make sure the tire doesn't rub under compression. For inner, there's a few mm clearance.

Could a 305 fit on the rear? I don't know, it'd be very close. From what I'm seeing, I wouldn't try it on a lowered car. There's only a few mm clearance on both sides with this setup.

And this is 295 on stock 10" ET40 compared to your 295 on 10,5" ET45

https://www.willtheyfit.com/index.ph...0-5&offset2=45

Thinking...

The tyre on your 10,5" rim will sit on the rim's outer edge 1,3mm further out than the 10" OEM rim edge. BUT, both tyres being 295, on the 10,5 rim it will be pulled further inwards due to the 10,5 inner rim edge being 11,4mm further in than the OEM. So even if your rim outer edge is 1,3mm further out the tyre will probably stick out less than on OEM. Question is how much...
