What's impressive is Lamborghini Urus at 2:55.8 and Porsche Cayenne Turbo at 2:59.2 and 5120 lb. I assume Turbo S is even faster...

Wonder what the Cup 2s would have done. Maybe shave a couple of seconds?

I was wondering when the Lightening Lap would come out this year. Some surprising results from the SUVs, and looks like the AMG GT4D has taken the 4-Door record from the M5. And of course, the Giulia QF yet again can't successfully go one lap without some of its stereotypical Italian electrical issues, sad, although its SUV counterpart the Stelvio QF didn't seem to have any issues. :

Two observations from the article.

1) BMW should offer a Sport Cup 2 tire option on the M's. Even if no consumers would actually order an M5 with them, that way they can supply those to the magazines for these tests so they'd be on equal footing with cars like the AMG GT and Quadrifoglio.

2) "This M5 is not playful. Or nimble. Or light."

"The handling and grip of this 4628-pound machine [AMG GT63 S] foster total confidence."

The AMG GT63 S weighs 4628lbs. Obviously the M5 must weigh more, right? Nope. 4241lbs. Yet somehow C&D manages to call the M5 heavy in the first 9 words, while not just ignoring the extra 400lbs in the AMG, but practically treating it as if it somehow helped the performance. The upcoming M8 Gran Coupe will likely fall around 4600lbs, and I'm calling it now - you can expect to read "this car is heavy" near the top of all the reviews despite it likewise weighing less (or no more than) than the RS7 and GT63 S and whatever else might be in the class at the time. Because somehow current BMW weights are compared only to BMW's from 20 years ago and Porsches, and Mercedes weights are compared to... I don't even know who. Naval vessels? Apparently as long as the other brands weigh less than battleships, they're good.

The M5 might not be light, but 4241lbs makes it the lightest vehicle in its class. Put it on Sport Cup 2's and it would probably equal the AMG GT63 S times, and you'd have $66k in cash leftover for an actual track toy, or for an X5 to haul your family and track toy to and from the track.

I’m with you but if you haven’t driven the AMG, you should try it. Even the E63S feels a lot lighter while driving it than you might imagine. I think it’s a result of the very stiff suspension, no rear subframe bushings, etc. but that heavy bitch will DANCE. Very impressive and surprising compared to all previous generations of E class AMG.

Out of the two, the E63S felt more agile and light on its feet to me while the M5 was a bit softer and slightly squishier.

This is dedicated to all those who think “lighter” must be better. If the lighter weight car handles worse it will not be faster on the track. The end.

And to be honest I think what is most impressive is that a Mustang GT PP2 was ahead of the M5 and 0.4s behind a 911. Now THAT is impressive.

They noted that the brakes on the M2C did not suck like they did on their weird "we think the Mustang is the prettiest flower in the pot" comparison review.

What time does the F80 M3 comp put in?

I would expect it to be as quick as the M5....

Which is good. Must have been a one off. Imagine how much ahead in the lightning lap a GT350 would have been.

Why M340i is being excluded from any type of comparisons by major publications? There is a level of consistency here.

"Months ago, as the Bavarians replaced their M2 with the M2 Competition for 2019, they made a point of noting that Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires are now homologated for the car by BMW and available in the U.S. as a dealer-installed accessory. But this M2 Competition rolled off the transporter wearing the factory-fit Pilot Super Sports."

So the Carrera T and Cayenne Turbo both get "dealer-installed" super sticky tires, so why not also do that with the M2C?

Obviously, C&D can't always get exactly what they want, but it would've have been nice to see how these cars stack up with comparable tires. I expect the M2CS will be riding on Cup2's when it's in Lightening Lap next year, so that should definitely put up a nice time.

I don’t get why people expect miracles out of pilot Sport Cup 2s. On a 3 min track you can count on 3s max over MPSS. That’s still a 2:56 lap at best.

The Lightening Lap is always tested during late April to early May, so this was done months ago when M340i's were likely still arriving at dealers or possibly not even available. Also, C/D asks BMW to provide vehicles, BMW likely chose the M2C and M5C as their choice, or maybe C/D wanted to test those particular vehicles instead, but most of the time, C/D sends out invites to every automaker to participate, and they likely want to send their best/fastest cars for the track.

I'm gonna say its likely BMW who didn't provide the vehicle or didn't have it on sale at the time of the event. Another question is why haven't there been any publications that have reviewed the M340i? Likely BMW just hasn't given it to the press or the press hasn't requested the vehicle.

Regardless Cup 2 is that much better of a tire vs MPSS.
