Fees at signing
I've bought plenty of new cars over the years, but later this year I'll take delivery of my first BMW (week 45).
I know every dealership may be different, but what additions to MSRP can I expect beyond the usual? Destination charge = $995 Registration, title, AQ, temp tag: $30 Vehicle license tax: Base is 60% of selling price & you pay $2.80 per $100 value. For example $62,000 x0.6 = $37,200 ÷ 100 = 372 x $2.80 = $1041.60 Sales tax is 7.8% here, so $62,000 x 7.8% = $4,836 Documentation fees = ? Prep = ? VTR = ? Plus any dealer adds, of course. Anything else? Thanks! Last edited by Wharf Rat; 09-23-2017 at 06:42 PM.. |

Hi, I just took delivery of my MY18 this morning and was looking over the Purchase and Sale. In very fine print was Theft Avert $249.00. After researching this, which was never discussed by my C/A while filling out P7S, I found it was for glass etching in case of theft. While doing the finance with the BMW finance officer, I told her to take it off as I never ordered it. She had no problem doing it.

Tried to get me to add all sorts of warranty packages to the car...I could have easily walked out the door spending over $100k on the car after extended warranties, maintenance warranties, tint, paint protection...easily

The M2 is my second BMW (just completed the contract/sale this week - ED in 11 days) but on my first, a 2013 335i, there was a doc fee (I've seen $150 - $299 tho others have seen even lower), 'MACO' fee (aka advertising fee) which varies but was about $225 for me 5 years ago, & training fee, which was $180.
The latter two don't apply to ED, so I didn't have those this time - just had a $150 doc fee but a $101 'Inventory Fee' appeared on the contract, which is apparently some Texas thing, but I protested and had it refunded since it wasn't mentioned up front and my car will never be held in their Texas inventory since it's ED and will be "courtesy re-delivered" to me back here in MD. Short story is there's a bunch of potential fees they can come up with - just tell them you want to know them all up front.

I have a PE so it was closer to $70k out the door (so $30k in additional bullshit). I feel like tint and clearbra were like $5-10k. There were MULTIPLE warranties and maintenance warranties that were easily $15k at the upper levels.
I just remember saying "I decline these services" A LOT |

For my Mother in-law's Kia they had the sales tax .25% higher than it should be. I had to prove it using my phone on the IL Dept of Rev website. They looked surprised and fixed it. My attorney said I should have paid it and then launched a class action suit against them since they were probably doing it to all customers and then pocketing the extra .25% (which can certainly add up!).

Edit - and seriously, they had the base rate of IL wrong - how does a dealer do that? one answer - on purpose. My point here is, check the damn tax amount on every deal.

Also, if you finance through the dealer make sure the rate they are giving you is the EXACT rate from their bank. Many times they'll add a quarter point or something, not tell you, and just bank it as profit.

Good point. Right now, the BMW rates aren't competitive. So, unless something changes, they won't be holding the paper.

$75 documentation fee + 8.25% sales tax and license plate cost. No inventory, advertising or other fees where I buy new BMW's. I avoid Houston dealers because of their gouging advertising, inventory and other bogus fees that easily add $500+ to the car cost.

I paid price + Destination/Handling + Tax. I also paid them to take care of the state paperwork ($100) and registration, but that was it. All that was negotiated before I ordered the car. They did try a really soft sell on extended warranties, paint protection, etc. I passed on everything except extending coverage to wear items like brakes.
Other than warranties, paint protection, etc., everything should have been included in the original paperwork you signed when you finalized your order. Adding marketing, training, inventory fees, etc. at delivery is just an underhanded attempt at re-negotiating the deal. |

Thanks for the replies.
My negotiated deal was at MSRP - they wouldn't budge below & I wouldn't go above. My CA is saying that the average of all post-MSRP fees on M2s they have sold is about $1,500, with the lion's share being our vehicle license tax here (probably nearly $1,100). And then the 7.8% sales tax. As for warranties, I plan to add UC+ for $600. |

Yeah, you can't get out of the licence fee/tax and sales tax. Good to see no advertising/training/etc. crap. MSRP seems pretty standard for M2. Almost no one seems to get it at a discount.

Straight forward MSRP ED purchase with Sunroof, Apple CarPlay, and Destination Charge… added $600 UltimateCare+ UC+… less $1,000 down payment… in California. $80 Doc Fee seemed reasonable to me.
